Honor has just announced “three new technologies”, as the company says. The company has just shared some camera samples which were taken with a 48-megapixel rear-facing camera which will find its way to the company’s smartphones in the near future, it also announced its all-new “All-View” display with a display camera hole, and on top of that, “Link Turbo” service was also announced. That being said, let’s kick things off with the camera, as that is arguably the most interesting part here. We’re looking at the Sony IMX586 sensor here, which was optimized by Honor, of course. Honor did not beat around the bush, and has said straight-up that this camera will be included in the upcoming Honor View 20 smartphone. While we’re on the subject, Honor announced that it will announce a flagship phone on January 22, and it’s quite obvious now that it is the Honor View 20 the company talked about. In any case, Honor is using the Kirin 980 SoC in order to get the best out of this camera, a processor which comes with dual-ISP and dual-NPU chips, and is capable of performing multi-frame processing. We’ve included Honor’s camera samples in the gallery down below, but please do note that these have been compressed from 48-megapixel shots.
On top of the camera, the company also announced its “All-View” display which is also confirmed to be included in the View 20. As already mentioned, a display camera hole is included in this display, and the company says that it achieved this design by a complex 18-layer technology stack which carefully embeds the front camera in the display area of the screen, and Honor says that this is an almost fully bezel-less display. And last, but not least, Link Turbo. Link Turbo is basically a new service which automatically analyzes users’ usage models and network conditions in order to switch seamlessly between Wi-Fi and 4G networks, and by doing that, it boosts downloading speeds by adopting both networks.
Background: The Honor View 20 will be a direct successor to the Honor View 10 which was announced at the end of 2017. The View 20 will not be announced before the end of this year, it will land on January 22, as the company already announced that event. Needless to say, the View 20 will become Honor’s new flagships, and it will remain its flagships throughout 2019, even though the Honor 11 or 20 (depending on which name Honor opts for) will be on the same level as the View 20. The Honor View 20 will offer a considerably different design compared to the View 10, you can expect to see considerably thinner bezels, and a larger display included in the device, as it will probably offer a similar footprint as the View 10.
Impact: All in all, the 48-megapixel camera that will ship in the Honor View 20 definitely sounds promising, at least based on the company’s camera samples, though it remains to be seen what it will perform like in real life. Link Turbo also looks good on paper, and it will be one of those conveniences that you probably won’t think about. As far as the display is concerned, well, it all depends on whether you like display camera holes, or do you think they’re just as bad (or worse) as notches.
