Leak: Huawei Will Jump On The Water Droplet Notch Bandwagon With P30 Smartphone

Recently-leaked render of the Huawei P30 and front panel of the P30 Pro supply details about the design of the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro. According to the recent leaks, the two devices will feature a waterdrop-shaped notch found above the handset’s display, and this notch will contain the smartphones’ single front-facing camera. Also noticeable from the leaked images are the very thin top and side bezels and the thicker bottom bezels.

Furthermore, the leaked render also shows the rear panel of the Huawei P30. As opposed to the earlier reports which mention that the device will feature a triple rear-camera setup, it seems that the Huawei P30 will include four shooters at the back. Users may find the four vertically-arranged rear cameras at the upper left-hand corner of the device. An elongated camera bump holds the three rear shooters and the LED flash, while Huawei placed the fourth rear camera directly under the other three shooters. The leaked render also shows that the right side of the handset contains the power button and the volume rockers, while the rear panel will have the logo of the device manufacturer and the Leica branding.

Background: Most of the information about the design of the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro originated from recent case leaks, and based on these rumors, it was initially speculated that the Huawei P30 will have three rear cameras. Previous reports claimed that instead of a fourth camera, the oval-shaped hole found under the vertical cutout of the three rear shooters will host the LED flash. Furthermore, a recent leak released by industry insider Evan Blass corroborated the earlier rumors. Blass previously said that the Huawei P30 will have a triple rear camera setup and that the main camera of the handset will have a 40-megapixel sensor. In contrast, earlier reports and leaks seem to agree that the Huawei P30 Pro will have four rear cameras and a dual LED flash setup placed beside the sensors.

Recent reports also say that the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro will feature the Kirin 985 chipset. This SoC likely offers slight improvements and performance optimizations over the Kirin 980 chipset found in the Huawei Mate 20, although there is no available information about the exact enhancements that Kirin 985 brings over the older SoC. Earlier rumors also show that both the Huawei P30 and the P30 Pro will have a 24-megapixel front-facing camera and that the two handsets will ship with at least 6GB of RAM. Moreover, the two upcoming flagship smartphones could also sport under-display fingerprint scanners. Furthermore, recent reports show that both handsets will ship with Android 9 Pie pre-installed, although Huawei’s proprietary skin, EMUI, runs on top of Google’s operating system.

Impact: The contradictory information provided by the recent leak casts doubt on previous rumors, although users should expect that more information will become available as the launch of the device draws near. The Chinese tech giant will reportedly announce its latest flagship smartphone offerings during the Mobile World Congress 2019 event that will take place in Barcelona, Spain. Nonetheless, Huawei is clearly serious in beating its rivals on smartphone camera quality, and the addition of more sensors could help the device maker achieve its goal.
