Mopria Alliance has just announced a new application and a universal standard along with it. The company has announced the Mopria Scan App, an app that “provides a complete scan solution and universal standard that is compatible with scan devices from most manufacturers”, says the company. Thanks to this application, you will be able to scan photos, documents, and various other media, and have those available on your phone momentarily, and the best of all, this application is completely free to download and use, while ads are not included in the package at all. Thanks to this app, you can also use your scanner or multi-function printer (MFP), and scan something that will be directly pushed to your Android smartphone. You will not need to install any third party programs, frameworks, or anything of the sort in order to do that, which is needed for the vast majority of similar services out there.
Having said that, the Mopria Alliance actually released a promo video for this application, a video which essentially shows you how the whole thing works. Starting with launching the application and connecting to a nearby scanner wirelessly, all the way to actually scanning the documents, and having them available on your device. If you prefer images to video, the gallery down below contains a couple of images that basically detail the whole procedure. The design of this app is quite straightforward, it’s nothing to write home about, but it’s modern, and it’s not in the way.
Background: It is not exactly surprising that the Mopria Alliance came up with this application, as it was founded by Canon, HP, Samsung, and Xerox, so not only is this announcement not surprising, but it’s also not surprising that the app supports a ton of scanners out there. Over time, the Mopria Alliance grew quite a bit, so it includes 21 companies today, as Adobe, Epson, Fuji, Kyocera, Microsoft, Lexmark, Qualcomm, Sharp, Toshiba, and many others joined the cause. It is also worth noting that the Mopria Alliance is a non-profit membership organization, in case you were wondering, and its sole mission is providing universal standards and solutions for print and scan.
Impact: The Mopria Alliance has a ton of members at this point, and all of them have quite an influence in the scan and print department, while many of them actually manufacture hardware that can both scan and print, so releasing Mopria Scan certainly makes sense. This application is brand new, and it has been rated only six times thus far, and it has an almost perfect score on the Play Store. The application works as promised, and as long as your scanner or MFP is compatible with Mopria Scan, and chances are it is, you should have no problem of scanning documents, pictures, and so on. There are a ton of solutions out there which offer you to do the same with your phone’s camera, but it’s not the same, a dedicated scanner or MFP can do a much, much better job at scanning than a phone’s camera can, logically.
