A new alleged Nokia 9 PureView case has just surfaced online, and it basically reports the same thing other cases did. If you take a look at these two images, you will be able to see your regular, generic case, which has seven cutouts on the back, just like every other case for this phone that we’ve seen in the last couple of months. This is a see-through case, and aside from reaffirming that the Nokia 9 PureView will ship with seven rings on the back, it also reaffirms that the Type-C port, microphone, and a loudspeaker will be placed on the bottom of the device. There’s nothing really spectacular about this leak, or anything of the sort, but it does, once again, shares the same info that other leaks shared, which makes us believe that the real Nokia 9 PureView will sport seven rings on the back, five of which are reserved for its cameras.
Seven Rings = Seven Cameras?
You will notice that there are seven rings included on the back of this phone, but only five of those cutouts are reserved for the device’s cameras. The sixth cutout is there for an LED flash, and the seventh for some sort of a dual-sensor, at least based on rumors. The Nokia 9 PureView, as its name says, will include PureView camera technology, which we haven’t seen in a long time at this point, since Nokia’s Lumia days. PureView technology was great at the time, as the Nokia 808 PureView, and its Lumia sibling, were basically the best camera smartphones around. That PureView sensor that Nokia utilized, however, was quite large back then, and it remains to be seen what has changed through the years. Nokia acquired rights to use PureView technology and branding from Microsoft, that actually happened earlier this year, so we’re in the dark as to what exactly is Nokia preparing.
Delays, Delays… And Some More Delays
The Nokia 9 PureView was actually expected to arrive back in September, and it was supposed to be called the Nokia 9, as a direct successor to the Nokia 8. The phone’s launch was postponed at the time, and if reports are to be believed, HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, was the main man behind the delay, as he didn’t think that the phone is ready to be announced just yet. Several more delays followed after that, and HMD Global managed to get PureView rights from Microsoft in the meantime, and that played a part in those delays as well, quite probably, as HMD Global wants the phone’s cameras to be on point. The latest delay, which was reported quite recently, actually occurred because of the phone’s camera as well, as they’re still not where they’re supposed to be. The device is expected to arrive in early 2019, but it remains to be seen what will happen.
Snapdragon 845 or 855?
The Nokia 9 PureView was supposed to launch with the Snapdragon 845, as it was supposed to arrive a couple of months back, but considering all of these delays, it would not be surprising if HMD Global actually opts for the Snapdragon 855, as the chip had been announced recently, and the very first smartphone with that chip on the inside has already been announced, the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT. So, considering that HMD Global wants to release the Nokia 9 PureView as its flagship, the smart thing to do would be to include the latest flagship chip, in this case the Snapdragon 855. Nokia actually made a mistake of releasing the Nokia 8 Sirocco with the Snapdragon 835 in February last year, when the Snapdragon 845 was already around, and not only that, but the company set a rather high price tag on the phone, which did not really result in good sales for the smartphone. The same may happen with the Nokia 9 if HMD Global is not careful, as releasing a flagship smartphone with last year’s chip may not be the best idea in the world.
Design & Specs
The Nokia 9 PureView will be made out of metal and glass, at least if rumors and leaks are to be believed, as the phone’s CAD-based renders did surface a while back. The Nokia 9 PureView will not sport a display notch, nor a display camera hole, instead, it will ship with bezels above and below the display, though those bezels will not be too thick. The phone will sport a rather large display, a display that will be at least 6 inches in diagonal, and we’re expecting to see HMD Global utilize an OLED panel in this case. The phone will pack in at least 6GB of RAM, though it’s possible that we’ll see variants with more RAM as well. Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed on the phone, and the device will be a part of Google’s Android One project. On top of all that, HMD Global is expected to include a rather large battery, a unit larger than 4,000mAh.
