Lenovo has proudly shared some AnTuTu benchmark figures pertaining to its newest flagship phone, i.e., the Lenovo Z5 Pro which is the first device announced officially to take advantage of Qualcomm’s latest mobile chipset solution. According to a screenshot shared by the OEM and passed along by tech publication Wccftech, the Lenovo Z5 Pro scores 368,480 points in the synthetic benchmark, and as a result it surpasses all other mobile devices that came before it, including the Huawei Mate 20 series, the OnePlus 6T, as well as Apple’s iPhone XS which is powered by the new A12 Bionic chipset manufactured on a similar 7nm node as the Snapdragon 855 from Qualcomm.
Background: The Lenovo Z5 Pro was originally unveiled in November as a nearly bezel-less smartphone boasting no display notch and an uncompromised 95.06-percent screen-to-body ratio. It was launched earlier this week as the first smartphone to adopt Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and 12GB of RAM. Design-wise, the device tackles the display notch problem by borrowing a page from the history books and virtually adopting a “slider” form factor. But instead of concealing a physical keyboard similar to some of BlackBerry’s models, the sliding mechanism was built for the front-facing cameras, thus eliminating the need for a thick bezel or display notch. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 855 chipset is the flagship solution for 2019 and many Android-powered devices aiming to be released at the top of the food chain next year will adopt it, especially if they’ll want to take advantage of 5G connectivity.
The benchmark results are not too surprising given that Apple and Qualcomm have been locked in an apparent race for one-upping each-other in terms of benchmark figures every year. But one thing to keep in mind is that the Lenovo Z5 Pro tested in AnTuTu is also the first smartphone to sport 12GB of RAM, and the AnTuTu benchmarking tool takes the RAM amount and performance into consideration when determining a final score. Qualcomm’s solution also features a total of eight CPU cores whereas the A12 Bionic adopts six CPU cores instead. Having said that, it’s likely that Apple’s chipset has maintained its top spot as far as single core performance is concerned.
Impact: By publishing these benchmark figures it’s clear that the Chinese OEM wants the world to know that its latest flagship phone is the most powerful smartphone ever created, at least as far as AnTuTu goes. The device is scheduled to hit the shelves before 2019, at least in China, and thus it will enjoy a head start over its upcoming rivals expected to employ the same chipset solution from Qualcomm early next year. As yet it’s unclear whether the Lenovo Z5 Pro will be released in the western hemisphere but either way, the Snapdragon 855 solution will spread globally through other channels and OEMs in the coming months. Performance figures in synthetic benchmarks are expected to be similar across the board so, in a way, Lenovo’s benchmark results offer an early preview of other, future Android flagship phones set to employ the Snapdragon 855 chipset throughout 2019.
