Twitter for Android is getting a new update it seems, and this update actually comes with some new features. For one, it is now showing where client tweets came from, which is something we’ve seen in many third-party Twitter apps out there, so it’ll probably be a welcomed solution for many of you. Another change that the company made is video-related, this new update brings video playback controls. After you get the update, you will be able to skip forward or back, five seconds at a time, and all you need is to tap on the right or left side of the display… this is actually similar to what YouTube offers with its double tap feature, though on YouTube, you can actually set the number of seconds you’d like to skip at a time. Now, it is worth noting that some users received this, and some did not, while Twitter did not officially announce this update just yet. It is easily possible that the company is only testing these new features with some users, while a wider rollout will follow later on. In fact, one user, who is using two different Twitter accounts, has reported that on one account he can actually see what client tweets originated from, while the other is not showing such info. It remains to be seen if Twitter will announce this update soon, or is this, in fact, a test. Background: Twitter has not made a ton of changes to its application this year, but the company did announce that some changes are coming in the last couple of months. The most important change may come to tweets themselves, as the company’s CEO said that editable tweets may become a thing in the future, mainly to fix typos. He basically said that the company is working on a solution, as they want to implement it properly. The company is also planning to remove the “like” button as well, though that will not happen anytime soon, that’s for sure, as it’s not a priority for the company at the moment. The company actually did well when it comes to revenue as well, 2018 can be marked as a success for Twitter in that regard.
Impact: These new features in the Twitter app are not earth-shattering, not even close, but they’re convenient, especially the new video-related feature. YouTube was praised quite a bit for including such a feature to its Android app, as it gave users a quite way to skip a small part of the video without having to tinker with the slider and skipping more of the video than they want to, and it will be a handy thing to have in Twitter’s app as well. Twitter is not expected to make any big changes to its app before the end of the year, as editable tweets probably won’t roll out anytime soon, but who knows, we may see some new features before the year comes to an end.
