DxOMark, a well-known camera benchmarking service, has just launched a “selfie test protocol.” This is basically a new set of tests that the company will perform in order to benchmark the quality of front-facing cameras on smartphones, and in addition to announcing the changes on its official website, the company has also released a video on YouTube dedicated to its new test protocol.
This company has been evaluating smartphone cameras since 2012, and they’ve decided to pay more attention to selfies. In its tests, DxOMark tries to “replicate most real-life front camera use cases”, which include taking selfies of yourself, of yourself with a group of friends, indoor selfies, outdoor selfies, natural scenes, lab scenes, taking selfies with a selfie stick (multiple distances), and so on.
DxOMark says that they evaluate over 1,500 photos and two hours of videos in its selfie camera tests, for every phone, which is, needless to say, a lot. You will be able to find both objective measurements and perceptual evaluation results on the company’s website, while a ton of details are being considered in the process.
An overall score will be assigned to phones that are tested by the company, while you will also find scores for individual categories, including exposure, color, focus, texture, noise, artifacts, and flash. You can find a lot of additional info in the company’s official press release linked in the first paragraph, while an infographic is listed below this article, and it will provide you with more info as well.
Results So Far
The company has used this newly-announced procedure on 12 smartphones thus far, a full list of which you can find by clicking here. The Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note9 sit at the very top of that list, as both got 92 points from DxOMark.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 also got tested, and it sits in the third place on the list with 84, while the iPhone XS Max is right behind it with 82 points. The Galaxy S9 Plus is fifth-placed at the moment, with 81 points, while the Pixel 2 and Mate 20 Pro follow with 77 and 75 points, respectively.
The Galaxy S8 was awarded 73 points, and is eight-placed, while the Huawei P20 Pro, iPhone X, Meitu V6, and Intex Aqua Selfie were also tested, and awarded with 72, 71, 59, and 22 points, respectively. As you can see, there are not many phones on this list at the moment, but DxOMark is hopefully testing some additional devices as we speak, so you can expect that list to grow in the near future, not to mention that many more phones are slated to be released in the coming months.
The company’s selfie camera results are displayed in the general DxOMark ranking, you can see those scores right next to general score in the chart. As far as DxOMark’s general camera test is concerned, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro still top the list with 109 points, while they’re followed by the Apple iPhone XS Max, HTC U12+, Samsung Galaxy Note9, and Xiaomi Mi MIX 3.
