Lenovo has just announced two new devices at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, the Smart Tab P10 and Smart Tab M10, both of which are powered by Amazon Alexa. These are essentially 2-in-1 tablets which come with the Lenovo Smart Dock. Lenovo basically sees these devices as both tablets and smart displays, once you put a device into a Smart Dock, it will transform into a “Show Mode” smart screen device, says Lenovo. Once the Smart Dock is in show mode, the Smart Tab P10 / M10 will basically activate Alexa, so that you have easy access to it. Needless to say, both the Smart Tab P10 and M10 are powered by Android. The included Smart Dock also acts as a charger for the Lenovo Smart tab, as both the Smart Dock and Smart Tabs come with pogo pin connectors. If you’re wondering about audio on these two tablets, well, don’t be, as they will push out sound through full-range stereo speakers which are tuned by Dolby, as soon as you put either of the two in the dock.
In order for Alexa to properly hear you, no matter if you’re really close to the Smart Tab or not, Lenovo has included three far-field microphones into each of the two Smart Tabs, so these devices should not have issues picking up what you’re saying no matter how close you are to them, within a room, of course. Lenovo says that these two devices can be great cooking assistants, as Alexa can access recipes and instructional videos from the Food Network without a problem, so you don’t need to use your hands if they’re dirty at the time. Lenovo also claims that these two devices can switch between tablet and smart screen modes without skipping a beat, the switch is instantaneous. These two devices allow you to create separate profiles, so you can create a profile for you, your wife, kids, or whoever you want. This can be really useful if you have kids and want to lock some content, as the two devices come with a special kid’s mode, which offers curated children’s content.
Smart Tab Specs & Design
Both the Smart Tab P10 and M10 are fueled by the Snapdragon 450 64-bit octa-core processor, while both of them come with a 10.1-inch fullHD (1920 x 1200) display. The footprint of these two devices is also quite similar, the Smart Tab P10 measures 242 x 167 x 7mm, while the M10 measures 243 x 168 x 8mm. The two devices weigh 440 and 480 grams, and both of them ship with Android Oreo, says Lenovo. That is where the similarities end, though, as the Smart Tab P10 is a more powerful of the two devices, and also the more expensive one. The Smart Tab P10 features four front-facing Dolby Atmos speakers, compared to two included on the M10. The P10 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, while you will find 2GB / 3GB and 16GB / 32GB of storage on the M10. An 8-megapixel camera is included on the back of the P10, while a 5-megapixel camera sits on its front side, while you’ll find 5 and 2-megapixel cameras on the M10, respectively. The Smart Tab P10 also comes with a larger battery, a 7,000mAh unit compared to a 4,850mAh unit on the M10. The Smart Tab P10 also offers a more premium design than its counterpart, it’s made out of metal and glass, while the M10 comes with a soft-touch finish on the back, instead of glass.
Smart Dock
Lenovo did not really share any info regarding the design of the Smart Dock, but it seems to be made out of plastic, for the most part, while there is some sort of cloth-like material applied on its front side. The Smart Dock itself comes with two 3W full-range speakers, and 3 far-field microphones. The device weighs 800 grams, while it measures 283.6 x 65.5 x 50mm. As previously mentioned, this device also acts as a charger for the Smart Tab, and once the device is docked on it, it will automatically activate “Show Mode” on the Smart Tab.
Pricing & Availability
Lenovo says that the Smart Tab P10, M10, and the Smart Dock will become available sometime in January, so, you’ll be able to purchase them before the end of this month in specific markets, including the US. The Smart Tab P10 will cost $299, while the M10 will set you back $199 should you choose to buy it. The Smart Dock will ship with the Smart Tab devices, in both the P10 and M10 cases.
