LG is reportedly bringing back its popular second screen feature on its next smartphone – which, reports suggest, the name has not been finalized yet. But will likely be the successor to the LG G7 ThinQ released last Spring.
According to reports out of CNET, the phone will not be a foldable phone – which debunks the report that came out of South Korea recently stating it would be a foldable phone. It is apparently going to be an attachment. Allowing you to attach a second screen to the phone, which could double the screen size of the device, according to people familiar with the matter.
This sounds like it’ll be something similar to what LG and Motorola have done with their modular phones – of course Motorola had a much better attempt than the LG G5, but the LG G5 could be the blueprint for this. It’s not quite a foldable phone, but it would serve the same purpose. Of course, right now, there is very little information to go off of, when talking about this phone. So it’s hard to visualize what LG might be building with this new smartphone.
LG is reportedly going to be announcing this phone at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona. LG hasn’t confirmed that it will be the G8 – though it would be a bigger surprise if it did. This could be part of a new lineup, something similar to the G Flex a few years ago, that had that flexible P-OLED display.
Mobile World Congress is the biggest mobile show of the year. This new LG smartphone is going to be one of many that are shown off at the trade show in Barcelona. Others include the Samsung Galaxy S10 (though Samsung’s event is about a week before the show, but it will still be the biggest thing in Barcelona), the Sony Xperia XZ4, as well as smartphones from Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE and many more. It’ll be a crowded place, but LG is hoping it can stand out.
Standing out is something that LG has had trouble doing in the past few years. It has built some pretty incredible smartphones, but there was always something holding it back. Last year, it was mostly the design of the phone. The design felt dated, and didn’t feel as premium as what Samsung and others were putting out. LG is looking to put that behind them and stand out this year. This new flagship smartphone could help LG do just that. Though the company did try this before with the LG G5, and it failed pretty miserably, so we’ll have to wait and see.
LG is working on a foldable smartphone – well every smartphone maker is, really. However, this is not that foldable smartphone. It’s a slightly different concept, and it does sound intriguing. We’ll have to wait and hear from LG on what exactly this phone is going to be able to do. LG could surprise us, and that is likely what the South Korean company is hoping to do.
