HMD To Complete Nokia Android 9 Pie Rollout In Record Time

HMD Global has announced that Android 9 Pie is on its way to some of the company’s Nokia-branded smartphones. The company says that the Nokia 3.1 and 5 will begin receiving the update “in the next few days”. The original Nokia 6 (2017), will get the same update in about a week or two, said Juho Sarvikas, HMD’s Chief Product Officer.

The company’s Chief Product Officer also clarified that HMD is finishing up Dolby Atmos features (when it comes to Android 9 Pie optimization) for those phones, before the update finally lands. Now, these three devices are not the only ones that will get the update in the near future, as the Nokia 1 and 3 are also in the company’s plans.

Mr. Sarvikas said that the Nokia 1 and 3 will follow in the Nokia 3.1, 5, and 6 (2017) footsteps, and will receive the update in Q2 2019, at the very beginning of Q2, it seems, so you can expect the update to arrive in April, quite probably. Do note that when an update starts rolling out fo one of these devices, we’re looking at gradual rollout, so not everyone will get the update the very same day it becomes available, of course.

HMD Global is one of the top companies when it comes to updating their smartphones to the latest version of Android, as the company adopted Google’s Android One project. That being said, HMD planned to update more or less its entire portfolio of handsets to Android 9 Pie by the end of Q2 2019, which seems to be a possibility at this point. As part of the Android One project, the firm is expected to provide Android updates for two years for its devices, and also provide those phones three years worth of security updates.

Other Phones, Existing & Upcoming

The Nokia 8.1 was introduced at the beginning of December, and that phone actually ships with Android 9 Pie out of the box. HMD already updated pretty much all of its smartphones to Android 9 Pie (save for the five we’ve mentioned in this article), including the Nokia 7.1, 8, 8 Sirocco, and so on. As already mentioned, the company basically plans to push out Android 9 Pie to its entire portfolio of Android devices by the end of Q2 2019.

The Nokia 9 PureView is quite probably the most interesting, and most talked about Nokia-branded smartphone at the moment. That device’s release was postponed a number of times thus far, and it seems like the company will introduce it at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in Barcelona, but nothing has been confirmed just yet.

The Nokia 9 PureView will sport five cameras on the back, if the rumors and leaks are to be believed, while you can expect to see PureView technology included in the mix, as the phone’s name says. HMD managed to get permission from Microsoft last year to use PureView technology.

The Nokia 9 PureView will be made out of metal, and it will not sport a notch or a hole-punch, at least if the leaked info is to be believed. The phone is rumored to arrive in both Snapdragon 845 and 855 variants, which would be an odd move on HMD’s part, but there you have it.
