Xiaomi has announced its very first Android Go smartphone, the Redmi Go. As most of you know, this phone was technically announced by the company’s sub-brand, Redmi, as the company announced not long ago that Redmi is becoming a separate entity, kind of. Having said that, the Redmi Go is an extremely affordable smartphone, which comes with entry-level specifications, as expected for an Android Go handset.
Priced At Only €80
Let’s get that price out of the way first, as that is one of the main selling points of this handset. The Redmi Go will be priced at €80 (approximately $92) in Europe, but it will not become available in the US, at least there are no plans for such a release anytime soon. The phone will become available in Europe in February, and the company also confirmed that the device will find its way to the Philippines, though the price tag for that country has not been confirmed just yet.
Uninspired Design
Truth be said, the Redmi Go is not much to look at, but that’s what was expected at this price tag, and the same applies for basically all Android Go phones. The device is made out of plastic, mostly, and its bezels are not exactly thin, it has considerable bezels above and below the display, and even on its sides.
The Redmi Go comes with a single camera on the back, and it does not offer a fingerprint scanner at all. If you’re not a fan of capacitive buttons, well, you might want to stay away from this handset as well, as it comes with your standard set of capacitive buttons below the display, overview (multitasking), home, and back buttons, respectively. All of its physical keys are located on the right.
Entry-Level Specifications
In terms of specs, you’re getting the sheer basics. The phone features a 5-inch HD (1280 x 720) LCD display, while it is fueled by the Snapdragon 425 64-bit quad-core processor. The phone packs in 1GB of RAM, and it comes with 8GB of internal storage, which you can expand up to 128GB by utilizing the phone’s microSD card slot.
A 3,000mAh battery is included in the package, while you will find an 8-megapixel camera (1.12um pixel size, f/2.0 aperture) on the back of the device. A 5-megapixel selfie camera (1.12um pixel size, f/2.2 aperture) is also included, while Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition) comes pre-installed on the Redmi Go.
The Redmi Go comes in Black and Blue color variants, and it supports 4G LTE connectivity, both TDD-LTE and FDD-LTE, and if you’d like to check for specific bands, one of the images in the gallery will reveal that info to you. Bluetooth 4.1 is enabled on this phone, while you will find a regular micro USB port on the bottom of the device, and the phone will allow you to utilize two SIM cards at once as well. The device measures 140.4 x 70.1 x 8.35mm, while it weighs 137 grams.
That is more or less everything we know thus far. This handset will be ideal for those of you looking for an entry-level phone with clean software, and we presume that some of you may get it as either a secondary smartphone, or perhaps a phone for someone who’s not in need of a high-end device, like an elderly person or something of the sort. All in all, it’s good to have options.
