Samsung has just suggested that its foldable smartphone may launch at the same time as its Galaxy S10 flagships. The company has installed billboards in Paris’ famous Place de la Concorde, and those billboards are in Korean, interestingly enough, while Samsung also mentions that everything will be revealed at its Unpacked event. In any case, when translated, the two billboards say “The future unfolds” and “February twentieth”. Now, some may shrug this off and say that the company is simply teasing the arrival of its Galaxy S10 flagships, and that’s it, but the use of the word “unfolds” and the fact that these writings are in Korean for some reason, do suggest that we’re in for more than that, especially the word “unfolds”. It’s not exactly a secret that Samsung is developing a foldable smartphone, a phone that the company already showed off (with a case on it) during its developer’s conference at the end of last year. The company also showed off that phone to its partners behind closed doors at CES 2019, and the device is expected to arrive soon. That being said, it seems like the company is planning to unveil it sooner than expected, at the same time as the Galaxy S10, at least the company’s teasers indicate that will be the case.
Why Not Wait & What To Expect
Rumors are saying that Huawei is planning to show off its foldable smartphone during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, so Samsung is probably looking to trump its competitor, and get all the spotlight. Just to be clear, Samsung’s Unpacked event is scheduled for February 20, right before the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona takes place. It is quite clear that we will see the Galaxy S10 flagships at that event, but the company’s foldable handset, possibly called Galaxy Fold, may be featured there as well. Based on what the company showed off thus far, the device will sport a rather large display, which you will be able to fold, after which a secondary display (which is a lot smaller) will activate, and allow you to use the device as a regular smartphone. The phone that the company showed off at its developer’s conference was obstructed by a case, so we do not know the full story behind its design, but thickness seems to be a rather major issue that keeps on being mentioned by people. It remains to be seen how thin / thick will the phone be once the company finally reveals it, but foldable smartphones are a completely new category of smartphones, and it is possible that the device ends up being thicker than it should, which is something that will need to be corrected in the second-gen model, if at all possible, as there’s only so much you can do when folding is required. That’s only a guess, who knows, maybe the device ends up being a lot thinner than we’re expecting, we’ll just have to wait for Samsung to share all the details, of course, and by the looks of it, that will happen in about a month, on February 20.
