The most premium variant of Acer’s initially business-oriented Chromebook Spin 13 is finally available to purchase for general consumers after being spotted on Amazon by Chrome Unboxed. Designated model number CP713-1WN-59KY, the Chromebook sets itself apart from the company’s less expensive consumer model by doubling down on RAM memory.
Priced at $966.51 with free shipping, that means users get 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage for just over $70 more than the lower-priced variant with only 8GB of RAM. Memory in a Chromebook is arguably the most important component, so that is going to have a substantial impact on overall performance.
On-point performance and design
Acer’s Chromebook Spin has held onto its top spot on the Android Headlines Chromebook top ten list for several months and although it won’t remain there forever, that’s not without good reason. Aside from the boost in memory, the newly-available Acer Chromebook Spin 13 has a plethora of characteristics that make it stand out.
For under $1000, buyers get the same premium all-aluminum 2-in-1 aesthetic and high-quality build as the slightly more budget-friendly version, complete with a backlit keyboard and Gorilla Glass touchpad. The hardware measures in at 245.87 x 309.63 x 17mm and weighs right around 3.5lbs. A garaged Wacom active stylus is included in the package, as are two USB-C ports, a single standard USB port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The USB-C ports enable display-out capabilities as well as more typical use for charging and transferring data.
Packed underneath the keyboard and just above the Acer Chromebook Spin 13’s dual HD stereo speakers, Chrome OS is powered by an 8th generation Intel Core i5-8250U processor. That’s backed up by a 6MB cache and clocked at 1.6 GHz with a turbo boost of up to 3.4 GHz. An Intel UHD Graphics 620 integrated chip handles graphics processing.
Just above the 13.5-inch Gorilla Glass-coated multitouch display panel, Acer includes a 1280 x 720 HD 88-degree wide-angle webcam with HDR. The display panel itself is set at a ratio of 3:2, with viewing angles at up to 178-degrees. The resolution of that screen comes in at 2256 x 1504, allowing Android or Linux apps to run with crystal clarity while the processor, RAM, and storage ensure there’s no lag whatsoever.
Battery life with the Acer Chromebook Spin 13 is rated at up to 10-hours with light to moderate use.
A hot product sells fast
Acer hasn’t made any announcements regarding the reasoning for putting its top-end business Chromebook up for sale but the results of the decision are immediately apparent. While the Acer Chromebook Spin 13 was only just added to Amazon, it is selling out quickly and there are only two remaining in stock as of this writing. More will probably be added in the future and the device is selling at other online retailers such as Newegg too but that could soon cease to be the case as well.
The rate of sales for Acer’s top-of-the-line Chromebook Spin 13 is likely down to the fact that it is almost on par with Google’s own Pixelbook in nearly every respect but at a significantly lower price point. So this Chrome OS device certainly isn’t going to hang around on shelves for long.
