Samsung has introduced its very first foldable smartphone on February 20, the Galaxy Fold, and now the company has released a video in which it gives us a closer look at the device. This video has been released on Samsung Korea’s official YouTube channel, and it has a duration of around four minutes, in which you will get to know the phone better, that’s for sure.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold was introduced along with the company’s Galaxy S10 series of smartphones, and it did manage to grab the spotlight, that’s for sure. The device is made out of metal and glass, and it folds inwards, like a book. The phone comes with two displays, which you can check out up close and personal in the video that is embedded down below.
The phone’s main display measures 7.3 inches, and this is a 2152 x 1536 Super AMOLED display with a 16:10 display aspect ratio. The phone’s secondary display is much smaller, and it takes up a portion of the back of the device. Its secondary display measure 4.6 inches, and we’re looking at an HD+ panel with a 21:9 display aspect ratio here, this is also a Super AMOLED display. The phone is quite narrow when folded, thanks to that display aspect ratio.
When you fold the phone, the smaller display ends up being available on the front, but it doesn’t go all the way up or down. The other side of the phone is occupied by three vertically-aligned cameras, and an LED flash which is placed below it.
As you can see, the phone’s cameras do protrude on the back quite a bit, while all its physical keys are included on right, no matter if the phone is folded or not. In addition to the volume up, volume down, and power / lock physical keys, there is also a fingerprint scanner located on the right. The phone’s SIM card tray is accessible from the left, but when the phone is folded, that SIM card tray moves to the right side of the device.
The provided video also demonstrates Samsung’s “PowerShare” feature, which is available in both the Galaxy Fold and the company’s Galaxy S10 series devices. PowerShare is essentially Samsung’s branding for reverse charging, as you can use the Galaxy Fold or Galaxy S10 to charge up Qi-compatible devices, such as Samsung’s new fully wireless earphones, Galaxy Buds.
Samsung actually incorporated a really interesting hinge in this phone, that hinge is visible when the phone is folded, though it actually looks quite nice, and fits well. When the phone is unfolded, the hinge is hidden away by the device’s back side.
Also, when the phone is unfolded, you do not get access to a regular, large display, as the phone has a corner notch of sorts, in the top-right corner, which is rather hard to ignore, but you can probably hide it away in settings if it bothers you, as such an option is available in the Galaxy S10 series for the display cutout.
The Galaxy Fold is actually quite a powerful device, it is fueled by the Snapdragon 855 64-bit octa-core processor, and it comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Android 9 Pie ships out of the box, with Samsung’s custom overlay on top of it. One 16-megapixel, and two 12-megapixel cameras are included on the back of this phone, while there are two cameras placed on its front side.
