The newly-introduced Samsung Galaxy S10 series represents more for the OEM than a new generation of devices. It is the foundation on top of which the next decade of Galaxy phones will be built, and as a result, it features a ton of new technologies and innovations. The new flagship has been improved in every aspect compared to previous generations and boasts several performance-focused features which were highlighted by Samsung on stage as well as in a new “In-Depth Look” press release.
New Wireless Charging Capabilities
As expected given the number of leaks preceding the event, the new Samsung Galaxy S10 series introduces a new energy management feature called PowerShare. It’s what the industry has been referring to as “two-way” or “reversible” charging, and allows the new flagships to wirelessly recharge other Qi-certified devices such as smartphones and wearables.
PowerShare effectively allows the Galaxy S10 and an additional Qi-certified device to be recharged simultaneously using a single wired charger, and the new flagships support Fast Wireless Charging 2.0, promising a 33-percent increase in charging speeds compared to the Galaxy S9. The new generation of smartphones also marks the launch of a new Wireless Charging Pad Duo, boasting a so-called Turbo Cooling Fan for safer and cooler charging.
Intelligent Connectivity
The Samsung Galaxy S10 boast Wi-Fi 6 technology, delivering up to 20 percent higher transfer speeds compared to previous Wi-Fi standards – at least where this can be achieved given the lack of Wi-Fi 6-enabled modems. It also boasts the fastest LTE speeds available on a mobile device, peaking at 2.0Gbps.
But aside from support for Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and faster LTE, the new flagships also boast a feature called “Intelligent Wi-Fi” designed to switch between Wi-Fi and LTE networks automatically and on-the-go without interruptions.
Intelligent Wi-Fi leverages on machine learning to determine whether the user might traveling in a vehicle or be located in a confined space with poor Wi-Fi signal and automatically switch to an LTE network twice as fast as before. In addition, the new feature can automatically determine whether a Wi-Fi network is insecure and notify the user who can then decide whether or not the device should establish a connection.
AI-Driven Performance
With the Samsung Galaxy S10, the OEM is introducing a feature called Intelligent Performance Enhancer. It relies on AI to determine the unique usage patterns and optimize performance by automatically adjusting settings for various internal components including the CPU, RAM, battery, all the while monitoring temperatures in order to mitigate performance degradation.
Intelligent Performance Enhancer works alongside the existing Adaptive Power Saving mode designed to optimize battery performance based on app usage.
Higher Raw Performance, More Memory
It’s traditional for Samsung to power every new Galaxy S flagship phone with a new chipset, and this year is no exception. The Samsung Galaxy S10 series is powered by the new Exynos 9820 SoC in regions where it doesn’t employ Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 solution. The in-house chipset was built on 8nm LPP technology and features two custom Exynos M4 CPU cores, two additional ARM Cortex-A75 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores for a total of eight.
Furthermore, the package boasts an integrated neural processing unit (NPU), a Mali-G76 MP12 (12 core) graphics chip with a frequency of 720MHz, and supports LPDDR4X RAM. Overall, the application processor promises 29-percent higher CPU performance and 37-percent GPU performance compared to the OEM’s previous generation of flagships.
As for memory, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ will be offered in a top-tier variant housing 12GB of RAM as well as 1TB of built-in storage expandable by an additional 512GB via microSD. A model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 512GB of storage will also be made available.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S10e will be offered with either 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or 8GB of RAM and 256GB of built-in memory, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be offered only with 8GB of RAM and the same storage options as the entry-level model. The Samsung Galaxy S10 series will be available for purchase next month.
