Independent camera reviewing platform DxOMark recently published the preliminary benchmark results for the Samsung Galaxy S10+, giving the device a score of 114 points in photography and 97 points in video recording for a final score of 109 points. This places the latest flagship at the top of the list, alongside the Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.
Rear-Facing Camera Tests
DxOMark claims that, for photography, the main triple-camera setup employed by the Samsung Galaxy S10+ performs very well in regards to color, exposure, bokeh, delivering high detail in close-range zoom images but also lacking in detail at longer zoom settings.
Pictures captured with the device indoors and in low light conditions have low noise levels, but at the same time, there is an overall lack of fine detail in most conditions. Likewise, the main cameras perform well in terms of bokeh effects delivering superior blur gradient and shape, yet the benchmarking site specifies that bokeh mode does create artifacts sometimes.
As far as video recording is concerned, the triple-camera setup provides good white balance in most cases and takes advantage of good image stabilization along with fast and accurate autofocus. On the other hand, DxOMark determined that videos recorded with Samsung’s latest flagship suffer from luminance noise in all lighting conditions, while ringing and judder effects occur in bright conditions. In low light, videos suffer from slightly unsaturated colors, and there is a loss of sharpness when tracking subjects.
Evidently, no camera is perfect but overall the Samsung Galaxy S10+ performed very well particularly in terms of photography. The device takes advantage of a 12MP primary camera with Dual Pixel Phase-Detection Autofocus and Optical Image Stabilization, having a 26mm wide lens and an f/1.5-2.4 aperture.
Aside from the main sensor, the device also carries a telephoto 12MP camera with an f/2.4 aperture, OIS, and 2x optical zoom, as well as an ultrawide 16MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture.
Selfie Camera Tests
Then there is the dual front-facing camera sensor and in this category, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ scores 101 points in photography and 88 points in video recording for a consolidated score of 96 points. This places the device at the top of the list in terms of selfies and is followed by the Google Pixel 3 with 92 points.
In short, the Samsung Galaxy S10+’ selfie cameras deliver great skin tones and color rendering, accurate focus, good detail in bright light regardless of shooting distances, low noise and good exposure in flash selfies, as well as good subject isolation which helps with bokeh modes.
Colors do suffer in low light, and fine details on faces are being lost in the same conditions, while the narrow depth of field can generate soft background details and soft faces in group portraits.
The Samsung Galaxy S10+ is equipped with a 10MP selfie camera boasting Dual Pixel PDAF and an f/1.9 aperture, along with an 8MP depth sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. This is the only Galaxy S10 variant equipped with two front-facing cameras, while the standard Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10e have a single unit.
