Qualcomm has announced a new mobile processor, the Snapdragon 712. The Snapdragon 712 is basically an improved variant of the Snapdragon 710, one of the company’s best mid-range processors. The Snapdragon 712 comes with the Snapdragon 710 features, while it adds performance boosts across the board.
The Snapdragon 712 is built on a 10nm process and the multicore Qualcomm AI engine, just like the Snapdragon 710, and it consists of the Qualcomm Kryo 360 CPU, Adreno 616 GPU, and the Hexagon 685 DSP. So, as you can see, the basis of this chip is identical to the Snapdragon 710, but the Snapdragon 712 offers up to 10-percent better performance than the Snapdragon 710, claims Qualcomm. The Kryo 360 CPU in the Snapdragon 712 is clocked at 2.3GHz, while that same CPU is clocked at 2.2GHz in the Snapdragon 710.
As far as gaming goes, the Snapdragon 712 is able to provide faster processing and graphics rendering. This chip also comes with the Qualcomm Aqstic audio technology, in case you were wondering. Now, the rest of this chip is almost identical to the Snapdragon 710 (save for charging tech and Bluetooth audio, we’ll talk about that a bit later), so you’re getting the Snapdragon X15 LTE modem here, and that modem is designed to tap into several enhanced 4G LTE features, and supports 4×4 MIMO and License-Assisted Access (LAA).
The Snapdragon 712 comes with the Spectra 250 camera ISP, and it supports 10 bits of color depth, while it can capture 4K videos. The Snapdragon 712’s Qualcomm AI Engine “knows your setting preferences and automatically adjusts them”, when it comes to the camera, says Qualcomm. That AI Engine is also capable of detecting if you’re shooting in low light, and will raise foreground lighting if that is the case.
The Snapdragon 712 is also wary of smartphone battery life, and is engineered to optimize it, says Qualcomm. This chip supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology, which essentially means that it can charge up batteries from 0 to 50 percent in 15 minutes, though that varies on the battery size. Speaking of which, the Snapdragon 710 supports Quick Charge 4, so the Snapdragon 712 is an improvement in that field as well.
As far as camera sensors are concerned, the Snapdragon 712 supports dual camera setups up to 20 megapixels, and single camera setups up to 23 megapixels. It also offers better Bluetooth audio, as it comes with TrueWireless Stereo Plus, and Broadcast Audio technologies. So, as you can see, the Snapdragon 712 is quite similar to the Snapdragon 710 in many ways, but it offers faster charging tech, better Bluetooth audio, and up to a 10-percent increase in performance.
You may argue that this is an iterative update, and it’s hard to argue with that, this is not a whole brand new chip, or anything of the sort, but just another version of the Snapdragon 710 which will not make a huge difference compared to its sibling, but it is an improvement, no matter what way you look at it.
