PR Stunt Or Gaffe? Xiaomi Official 'Accidentally' Reveals Mi 9 Flagship

The alleged Xiaomi Mi 9 has surfaced in China via Weibo (Chinese social network), and this leak is probably quite accurate, here’s why… it was originally posted by Wang Teng, Xiaomi’s Product Director. Mr. Teng deleted his post soon after, though, but it was saved by a number of users and reuploaded, as it is usually the case.

We are not sure if Mr. Teng mentioned this is the Mi 9 or not, but considering that he removed his post, and the shared image, and that the Mi 9 is right around the corner, the device he’s holding is probably the Mi 9. Now, the provided image does not exactly reveal a ton of info, but it gives us a look at the back of the device.

As you can see, the phone sports a glass back, as expected, while it is curved on the sides, as most flagship smartphones are. The device will include a vertical camera setup on the back, and it seems like the phone will sport three cameras on the back, even though only two are visible, as one is covered by Mr. Teng’s finger.

You will also notice that a fingerprint scanner is not visible on the back of the device, as the Mi 9 will probably include an in-display fingerprint scanner, as some Mi 8 variants did last year, though the Mi 9 is expected to include an improved version of an in-display fingerprint scanner, of course, maybe even an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner by Qualcomm, we’ll see. The provided image also reveals that the power / lock, volume up, and volume down buttons will be included on the right side of the device. That is more or less everything this image reveals.

What Else Can We Expect?

The Xiaomi Mi 9 will almost certainly be fueled by the Snapdragon 855, as Xiaomi always uses Qualcomm’s flagship processors for its Mi flagships. Chances are that the company will introduce more than one variant of the Mi 9, as it did with the Mi 8 last year, though all of them, except the “Lite” one, will ship with the Snapdragon 855.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition will probably be announced this time around as well, as a successor to the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, and it is expected to sport a see-through backplate. That will probably be the most powerful variant of the device, in fact, as the regular Mi 9 will probably be inferior to it.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is expected to sport a rather large display, which the provided image confirms. The Mi 5 and Mi 6 were quite compact phones, but with the announcement of the Mi 8, the company decided to increase the display size quite a bit, for whatever reason. The Xiaomi MI 8 shipped with a 6.21-inch display, while the Mi 9 may ship with a display of a similar size, or slightly larger at 6.3 or 6.4 inches.

Speaking of the display, the Xiaomi Mi 9 will probably include a fullHD+ Super AMOLED panel, though some variants of the device may ship with a QHD+ panel. The device will sport a flat display, and you can expect to see at least 6GB of RAM included on the inside. The Mi 9 is expected to sport a rather large battery larger than 3,400mAh, and it will almost certainly support wireless charging as well.
