A new report claims that Xiaomi’s upcoming Android One smartphones will ship with in-display fingerprint scanners. XDA’s Junior Member, franztesca managed to dig up some code which reveals that Xiaomi is working on three devices with in-display fingerprint scanners, two of which are likely Android One devices.
The three smartphones in question are codenamed “pyxis”, “bamboo_sprout”, and “cosmos_sprout”. The latter two devices are quite probably Android One smartphones, the “_sprout” suffix basically confirms that. Every smartphone in the Android One program has the word “sprout” in its codename, so… there’s that. We don’t know what “pyxis” is, but it’s not an Android One phone. It is possible that it is a variant of one of the two Android One phones that will be introduced in China under a different name, possibly the Xiaomi Mi 7X.
In any case, all three of these phones are being tested with “fod”, which stands for “fingerprint on display”. That term has been used by smartphone manufacturers for quite some time now, so it pretty much confirms in-display fingerprint scanners for all of these phones. It is highly likely that all three of these phones will ship with optical in-display fingerprint scanners, as ultrasonic ones require flexible OLED displays, and these three phones will likely be mid-range devices, and we’ll talk about them in a minute.
On top of everything, the source also claims that all three of these devices will include a 32-megapixel front-facing camera, like the Vivo V15 Pro. Those devices will also include 4-in-1 pixel binning support for that camera, and it is still unclear whether that will be the only front-facing camera, or one of them.
With all of that in mind, it is safe to assume that we’re looking at the Xiaomi Mi 7X, Mi A3, and Mi A3 Lite here. The “pyxis” smartphone probably stands for the Mi 7X, while the other two represent the Mi A3 and Mi A3 Lite. The Xiaomi Mi 7X will probably be identical to the Mi A3 in terms of the design, as that was the case with the Mi 5X and Mi A1, and also Mi 6X and Mi A2.
The Xiaomi MI 6X was released back in April last year, and it was followed by the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite in July. The Mi 6X is basically a Chinese variant of the Mi A2, they’re completely identical but come with different software. We’re still not sure what to expect in terms of the design, but chances are that the phone will start leaking soon. The Mi 7X will probably land in April this year, unless Xiaomi ends up altering its release cycle.
The Xiaomi Mi A3 Lite will be inferior to the Mi A3, and it may even sport a slightly different design, if previous models are any indication. As far as specs are concerned, we don’t really have any info regarding that either. We can assume that the Mi 7X / Mi A3 will sport large displays, 6+ inches, and that they will include at least 4GB of RAM, though it is possible that Xiaomi may include at least 6GB in there.
Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed on the Mi A3, and the phone will probably have thin bezels. The device may end up shipping with the Snapdragon 710 64-bit octa-core processor, but we’re only guessing. The Mi A3 Lite will include an inferior SoC, that’s for sure, probably from the Snapdragon 600 series.
