HMD Global's $189 Smartphone Is Now Up For Pre-Order

The Nokia 4.2 is now available for pre-order in the US, with a list price of $189.

HMD Global announced the Nokia 4.2 back at Mobile World Congress two months ago, along with a number of other smartphones. It was one that didn’t get as much attention as something like the Nokia 9 PureView, but it is definitely worth taking a look at. It’s one of the few decent offerings that are under $200, without many trade-offs.

The spec sheet include a 5.71-inch HD+ display, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chipset, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It also has a micro SD card slot for expanding storage, and Adoptable Storage is also supported. On the camera front, there’s a 13-megapixel main sensor with a 2-megapixel depth-sensor on the backside. With the front boasting a 8-megapixel camera. This is all powered by a 3000mAh capacity battery, that should get you through the day.

This is an Android One smartphone, so you’re going to get updates pretty quickly. Speaking of which, HMD Global is promising three years of security updates and two years of software updates. That sounds pretty good, but HMD Global is still sending out software updates to smartphones that are over two years old at this point, which is pretty nice to see.

There’s not a lot of storage available, at just 32GB. But the good thing here, is that this is an Android One device. And that means that there is virtually no bloatware installed. In fact, the only apps installed are ones that are mandatory to get Google Mobile Services certification. Which means you’re going to get even more storage available to use, out of the box. But having Adoptable Storage is also a nice feature. Allowing you to store apps on the micro SD card, as well as your photos and videos.

The Nokia 4.2 is not a show-stopping smartphone. It’s not going to compete with the Galaxy S10, or the LG G8 ThinQ, but it will compete with the Moto G7. The Moto G7 is actually nearly $100 more expensive, and while it does offer some better specs, in some areas. When it comes to updates, no one is able to compete with HMD Global right now. It is pushing out updates pretty quickly, and to some, that is going to be a big deal.

The good thing with Nokia pushing so heavily into the sub-$200 space, is the fact that we are getting more options for those that don’t want to pay a fortune for a new phone, but also don’t want a trash smartphone. A couple years ago, the only choices were really Motorola’s Moto E and Moto G lineup, which have gone up in price recently. But now we have HMD Global who is putting out smartphones that are under $200, and should really cost more. Not to mention the Android Go smartphones it has that are under $100.

Nokia 4.2 is available for pre-order today, and it is priced at $189. It will ship in two weeks, on May 14, according to the Amazon listing. You can get your pre-order in today using the link below.
