UPDATE: It turns out this render is fake.
Redmi’s upcoming Snapdragon 855-powered flagship has surfaced on Weibo (China’s social network), at least the source is claiming this is the device. As you can see in the provided image, the phone will sport a pop-up camera, and its bezels will be almost non-existent, while some specs surfaced as well.
If this leak is to be believed, the company’s upcoming flagship will be called the Redmi Pro 2, and it will be made out of metal and glass. The device’s display will sport rounded corners, while its bezels will be almost non-existent. The phone’s “chin” will be there, but it will be only a hair thinner than the side bezels, if this image is accurate.
The phone’s camera will pop-up from the top-right portion of the device, and if true, the Redmi Pro 2 will actually go the same route as the OnePlus 7, as OnePlus’ upcoming flagship is also rumored to sport a pop-up camera. This image also shows that the back side of the phone will be curved.
The phone will include three cameras on the back, and those cameras will be placed in the top-left portion of the device’s back side, while they will be vertically-aligned. An LED flash will sit right below those three cameras, and this image does not show it, but the camera setup will probably protrude a bit. The phone’s physical keys, as you can see, will be placed on the right.
In addition to the Snapdragon 855 processor, this image also claims that the phone will include an in-display fingerprint scanner, which makes sense as the fingerprint scanner is not visible anywhere on the device. A 48-megapixel main camera is also mentioned in this image, and that actually goes hand-in-hand with previous Redmi flagship leaks that we’ve seen.
If this info ends up being true, the Redmi Pro 2 will not only become the first Redmi-branded phone to sport a pop-up selfie camera and a 48-megapixel sensor, but also the very first smartphone from the company to include an in-display fingerprint scanner. Please make sure to differentiate Xiaomi and Redmi, as Redmi has become a separate company in January this year, so we’re referring to it as a somewhat separate entity.
Redmi’s Snapdragon 855-based flagship is coming, that is no longer a secret, as Xiaomi’s CEO did confirm it a while back. We still do not know when will the phone arrive, though, but the info that just leaked may end up being accurate. If it is, it’s good news for those of you who are not willing to break the bank in order to buy a Snapdragon 855-powered smartphone, and also those of you who do not like display notches and puncholes.
Redmi had announced several smartphones since it became a separate entity, including the Redmi Note 7 handset which arrived back in January. The Redmi Note 7 has been selling really well for the company since then, which is not all that surprising as the Redmi Note series has always been quite popular. The Redmi Note 7 is also made out of metal, though it sports a thicker “chin” than the company’s flagship will, while it also includes a tiny display notch, and a rear-facing fingerprint scanner.
