Sonos and Ikea have announced a new set of speakers. These include the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker and SYMFONISK bookshelf speaker.
First up is the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker. It’s an elegant looking table lamp that also has a speaker built-in. This makes it easier to have speakers throughout your home, without cluttering up your home. This also means less devices and less cords. The audio quality from the table lamp speaker is going to be about the same as a Sonos One. It might be a bit lower, but not by much. Which is pretty impressive given the size of this lamp, and the fact that it is also a lamp.
Then there is the SYMFONISK bookshelf speaker. This is a speaker that you can actually mount on the wall, and it looks quite nice. It’s subtle, and can act as a little shelf in your home. It can be placed horizontally or vertical in your home. Inside the bookshelf speaker, there are two class-D digital amplifiers, one tweeter, one mid-woofer and a ported enclosure. The table lamp speaker has the same internals, but it has a sealed enclosure.
Perhaps the most important part about these two products is the fact that they will act as regular Sonos speakers. This means that they will support multi-room audio with the likes of the Sonos Beam, PLAYBAR and other speakers. If you have a Beam in your living room, you could get a table lamp to go in the corner and then a bookshelf speaker to go on the other side of the room and have surround sound. It would also be cheaper than getting two Sonos One smart speakers too.
These both use WiFi, so they will be getting updates in due time. These do not support Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant in the same way that the One and Beam do. These will work the same as the PLAY:1 does. Where you can ask Alexa to play something on the SYMFONISK table lamp speaker. But you won’t be able to speak directly to the table lamp to get it to play something. That likely won’t change in the future. Remember these are already pretty densely packed speakers and are also pretty small in the first place.
Those that are looking to integrate some Sonos speakers into their home, this is the way to do it. These are going to be much cheaper than the Sonos One or even the PLAY:3 and PLAY:5 speakers, but they will still offer up some great sound quality. And the fact that you can make these blend into your home, makes them even better speakers than what else is in Sonos’ lineup right now.
There are two colors for this set of speakers. There’s a darker color which looks to be a dark gray with the lamp being a bronze color. And then a lighter color, with the speakers being a lighter gray and the lamp being white.
The SYMFONISK table lamp speaker and bookshelf speakers will be available in August, with prices of $179 and $99 respectively. These are effectively the cheapest Sonos products in its lineup. However, these are also some of the smallest out there. These will be available at Ikea and Sonos’ websites, as well as the usual assortment of retailers.
