According to a new report from Korean publication, ET News, the Galaxy A70S may become Samsung’s first smartphone to feature a brand new 64-megapixel camera. We’re talking about a 64-megapixel ISOCELL sensor that Samsung introduced earlier this year, as it seems like that sensor is aimed for mid-range phones, not flagship-grade ones.
The source basis its article on information that it received from industry sources, which claim that the Galaxy A70S will arrive with that sensor in the second half of the year. A more accurate release date has not been mentioned.
This particular sensor is called the ISOCELL Bright GW1, and it features the highest resolution in the company’s 0.8um-pixel image sensor lineup. This sensor is equipped with pixel-merging Tetracell technology, and remosaic algorithm.
Even though it is a 64-megapixel sensor, its goal is to produce bright 16-megapixel images in low-light environments, and highly detailed 64-megapixel pictures in brighter settings, claims the company.
This sensor also supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100dB, not to mention that it is equipped with a Dual Conversion Gain (DCG) that converts the received light into an electric signal, and all that according to the illumination of the environment.
The source also says that this 64-megapixel camera will not be included in the Galaxy Note10 lineup, as previous rumors suggested, and that makes all the sense in the world. As previously stated, this is a sensor for mid-range smartphones, not flagship handsets, and the Galaxy Note series definitely belongs in the flagship range.
So, what about the Galaxy A70S? Well, we don’t really have any info regarding this phone just yet, as this is the first time we’re hearing about it. Samsung did release the Galaxy A70, though, and the Galaxy A70S will likely be based on that phone. In fact, it may even be the very same device with upgraded camera setup, and several other specifications.
For comparison’s sake, the Galaxy A70 was introduced in March this year. The device is made out of metal and glass, while it includes three cameras on the back. Its main camera includes a 32-megapixel sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, while it is accompanied by 8 and 5-megapixel units.
The 64-megapixel sensor will almost certainly replace that 32-megapixel camera on the back, though it remains to be seen if Samsung will stick with the other two cameras, or change the whole setup.
The phone has really thin bezels, its “chin” is a hair thicker than the rest of the device’s bezels, and a teardrop notch is included at the top of the display. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 675 64-bit octa-core processor, and it remains to be seen whether Samsung is planning to move the Galaxy A70S to the Snapdragon 7XX series. Android 9 Pie will come pre-installed on the device, almost certainly, along with Samsung’s One UI skin.
