This Bizarre Smartphone Concept Is Both Foldable & Stretchable

A company called “Innosaem” reached out to us quite recently to present their concept smartphone which is in early development. The phone that you can check out in an animated image and video down below both folds and stretches, as you can see, and Innosaem actually claims it may become real in the future, which is a very bold claim.

This company is located in Korea, and it says that a patent has already been submitted in Korea, for the technology necessary in order to bring this smartphone to life. A product like this would definitely push foldable smartphones a step forward, as not only would you be able to use a noticeably larger display when the phone unfolds, but that display would become even larger when you stretch the phone from the unfolded state.

Innosaem claims that its foldable-stretchable mechanism increases screen size dramatically, and the company has released some info regarding that. When the device is folded, it offers a 5-inch display. When you unfold that phone, you end up having a 6.5-inch display, but when you stretch it, that display transforms to an 8.9-inch panel.

If the company actually managed to pull this off, and push this product out in the market, it will be quite interesting. Having something the size of a 5-inch phone in the pocket and being able to increase that display to 8.9 inches would be quite appealing to a lot of people, as long as the phone doesn’t end up being too thick when folded.

In the provided video down below, Innosaem actually mentions a number of different applications for this smartphone, and they’re not wrong. The question remains, though, will the company be able to push this phone to the market at some point, or is it aiming too high. It would surely be interesting to see a device like that out in the market, it would definitely contribute to the evolution of foldable smartphones.

Foldable phones are not off to a great start, though. Samsung had some display issues with initial Galaxy Fold review units, and had to go back to the drawing board in order to figure out what’s wrong with them. That resulted in postponing the release date for the device, which is not expected to arrive in June, though nothing has been confirmed just yet.

Huawei is actually expected to start selling its Mate X foldable handset in June, and in addition to Royole’s FlexPai which is already available, those are the only two foldable smartphones that are expected to hit the market in the near future.

Motorola is expected to announce its Razr foldable handset in the near future as well, and that is quite possibly the most anticipated foldable device at the moment. Based on leaks and the company’s patent, the device is reminiscent of the original Motorola Razr cellphone, and that managed to get quite a few people exciting. If Innosaem manages to bring its foldable and stretchable phone to the market, that would increase the competition in the foldable smartphones department, but the phone is in early development at the moment, so it’s probably not going to launch anytime soon.
