Xiaomi Mi 9 & Mi MIX 3 5G Join Google's Android Q Beta Program

Xiaomi has announced that Android Q Beta can now be installed on the Mi 9 and Mi MIX 3 5G. Following the Google I/O 2019 keynote, Xiaomi has announced its participation in the Android Q Beta program.

Google had announced that over a dozen developers have joined the Android Q Beta program this time around, and Xiaomi is obviously amongst them. This will give Xiaomi’s users a chance to try out brand new Android features, though do note that we’re looking at a beta build of the software, as its name says, so you may run into some bugs along the way.

If you opt to install Android Q Beta 3 on the Mi 9 or Mi MIX 5G, do note that you will need to flash it manually, and delete basically everything software-wise from your device. If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, there’s a chance you may brick your device, so proceed at your own risk.

If you’re still interested in testing out Android Q Beta 3 on either of the two devices, hit the link below this article, from which you will be able to download the necessary software, and you will also see detailed instructions as to how to install Android Q Beta 3 on either of the two phones.

Android Q Beta 3 brings some interesting new features to the table. A system-wide dark mode is finally available via this build, and it will even darken your notification shade, and some of Google’s apps as well.

Google had introduced a brand new navigation gesture system in Android Q Beta 3. The “pill” is no longer there, it has been replaced by a really thin line, which has a somewhat similar purpose. If you swipe up, you will go to your home screen, while if you swipe and hold, you’ll be thrown into the overview / multitasking menu.

Gone is the back button, now you can swipe from either the left or right side of the display to go back. You can also swipe across that thin line (either to the left or to the right) in order to quickly switch between apps. This is actually a similar navigation system as on MIUI, so those of you who have been using it on MIUI should be somewhat familiar with it.

Suggested actions in notifications have also been added in this Android Q build, and the same can be said for Prioritized notifications. This will allow you to set some notifications as “interruptive” or “gentle”, and your phone will act accordingly. These are only some of Android Q’s features / changes, many more have been added introduced by Google.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is the company’s flagship offering, and its pricing starts at €449 in Europe. The Mi MIX 3 5G, on the other hand, will become available later this month, and its starting price will be set at €599.
