The temperature is rising, the sun is staying out later, and that means that Summer is (almost) here. For bargain hunters, that means that Amazon’s annual “Black Friday in July” is almost upon us. Also known as Amazon Prime Day. Though it’s not so much as a “day” anymore, as Amazon makes it about six hours longer every year.
We’re right around a month away from Prime Day this year, which means it’s a good time to start looking at what to expect from Prime Day and get ready for the big shopping holiday.
When is Amazon Prime Day 2019?
So far, Amazon has not confirmed the dates for Prime Day 2019 just yet. But we, and a few other outlets, have heard from some companies that work with Amazon, that it should be starting on Monday, July 15 and possibly going until Wednesday, July 17. This is very similar to the dates from last year, where Amazon started Prime Day at 3PM on Monday, July 16 and it lasted until the early hours of Wednesday, July 18.
Amazon should be confirming the dates for Prime Day pretty soon. As well as giving everyone some details on what to expect this year. Last year, it was a 36-hour event, this year, we’re expecting it to be a bit longer, if not a full 48 hours. As Amazon has continued to extend the length of Prime Day.
What were the most popular deals on Prime Day last year?
Some of the more popular deals during Prime Day last year, were on Amazon hardware. Which shouldn’t be a huge surprise, as Amazon does typically drastically discount its own hardware during Black Friday and other big holidays. This included getting the Echo Dot (2nd generation) for $29 – the third generation wasn’t yet announced at this time last year. Amazon’s Fire Tablets also saw some pretty big deals during Prime Day last year.
One of the bigger deals last year, was the NVIDIA SHIELD TV, which was down to just $139. This was for the regular version (just the remote, not the controller and remote). This was a big deal, seeing as the SHIELD TV almost never goes on sale, and it was down $40. We did not even see this price again during Black Friday last November.
There were also plenty of good deals on robot vacuums from the likes of iRobot, Roborock, Neato and eufy. Not to mention Philips Hue and LIFX bulbs were also priced pretty low.
What kind of deals can I expect from Prime Day?
In the first couple of years, Amazon’s Prime Day was a bit of a joke. It was mostly products that weren’t best sellers for Amazon. The first year, a number of us here at Android Headlines only bought toilet paper during Prime Day. Because that was really the only thing worth buying. Since then – Prime Day kicked off for the first time in 2015 – Amazon has really listened to its customers and has turned Prime Day into a pretty big deal. Almost bigger than Black Friday.
This year, many of us are expecting deals on Amazon’s hardware once again. Echo devices are already priced pretty cheaply, but they should drop even more for Prime Day. The Echo was $69 last year. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see it drop down to $59 this year.
Also expect some deals from some of Amazon’s biggest sellers. Like Philips, Samsung, Sony, LG, Anker, Instant Pot and much more. If you’re looking to get some new electronics and can’t wait til Black Friday, then Prime Day is the best time to get them.
Black Friday used to be the best time to get a new TV or laptop. But as we’ve seen in recent years, Prime Day offers the same prices, about four months earlier, and without messing up your holiday budget. It’s also a good time to get a new laptop, as it is ahead of going back to school, so you can start the school year with a fresh laptop. Expect to see discounts on some of HP, Dell and Razer’s best-selling laptops. Including a number of its gaming laptops.
How Often Will New Deals Go Live?
In previous years, Amazon has put out a new round of deals every hour or two throughout the day and every three to four hours throughout the night. But the majority of the bigger deals are going to happen at the start of Prime Day, and at the start of the following day (around 5AM PST). Not everything that is on sale, will be highlighted by Amazon, on its Gold Box Deal of the Day page. As some sellers will discount their products to compete with everyone else, without telling Amazon.
Amazon will also have Lightning Deals, these will pop up about every 30 to 60 minutes throughout Prime Day. These Lightning Deals are actually going to be the big deals during Prime Day. These will only be available for a few hours or until the stock runs out. And stock will likely run out pretty quickly. So you’ll want to jump on those deals pretty quickly.
There will also be a number of other deals that are “coupon deals”. Basically, the price isn’t lower than normal, but if you go to the page, there will be a coupon you can clip to save $30 or, maybe a code to enter to save some cash. So you’re going to want to check that out during Prime Day. The short answer is yes. You do need to be a Prime member to take advantage of Prime Day. This is how Amazon is able to get even more people to sign up for Prime.

Is Prime Day an Amazon-only Shopping Holiday?
While the name sounds like it would only be available on Amazon, it is not. Many other retailers have taken to either price-matching Amazon’s sales, or doing their own Prime Day sale. In fact, eBay does a “Better Than Prime Day” sale, during Prime Day and even in the weeks leading up to Prime Day, to try and steal some of Amazon’s thunder.
So you will most likely see deals from eBay, Best Buy, Target, Walmart and many more, during Prime Day and around it.
