Google Trips is having its support cut off in late Summer as Google probably looks to remove the app from the Play Store, confirming that it will be ending support for the app on August 5. Trips was a one-stop shop style of app for all of your travel-related information, from details about flights, sights to see, and activities to engage in for any of your upcoming trips.
It was Google’s attempt to focus on giving people a useful tool for traveling so they wouldn’t have to use multiple applications or services, and it worked well, but apparently not well enough. That said, Google is no stranger to scrapping projects or changing things around as it often does this with other services.
While users may have to say goodbye to Google Trips support in just a short couple of months, Google plans to keep the best of the best features of the app and will be transporting them to Google Maps, so Trips will live on in a way, and this means that you’ll still be able to basically use one app for everything travel-related.
Planning a trip to Tokyo soon? Google Maps has your back. You’ll be able to look at maps of the city and find locations of places you’re staying as well as where that place is in relation to where you may be sight-seeing.
You can use Maps to plot navigation too, and now with Trips features being imported you’ll also be able to save places you’ve either visited or plan to visit. Wherever your destination Maps will now be the app you use to find things to do. This was one of the bigger and more useful features of Trips especially if you weren’t sure where to begin looking when it came to things to do.
Trip reservations are being imported as well, though this is a feature that Google notes will be coming soon, so presumably they won’t be available in Maps right away. When this feature does pop up, finding it will be simple enough. You’ll just need to open up the menu and find the “Your Places” option, tap on that and then lastly tap on “Upcoming Reservations.”
Google is adding these features into Search as well so if you don’t use Maps as often or if you feel like Search will just be an easier point of entry when it comes to utilizing the things you used to do with Trips, you’ll immediately be able to search for things to do at a destination and see your saved places.
This is also where you’ll go for viewing any of your trip reservations as it will be available from Search right away, which means you’ll only need to wait to view reservations in Maps and not just in general.
Things to keep in mind are the fact that Trips will still be usable up until August 5 and the app may be usable beyond that date, as Google doesn’t state they will be removing the app from the Play Store. That said the app could also be pulled at the same time which would explain the moving of features to two of Google’s most-used services. Trips is also still available on the web if you like to use it to plan your travels.
