HMD Global, like all other Android handset makers, are always looking for ways to expand their presence in countries all across the world. To this end, the manufacturer has struck an agreement with AT&T to bring the Nokia 3.1 A to AT&T’s Prepaid program in the United States.
The Nokia 3.1 A, the “A” presumably standing for “AT&T,” features a 5.45-inch IPS (image plane signaling) 18:9 full screen display, though the screen resolution isn’t mentioned in HMD’s official press release.
The 3.1 A is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 429 processor and features 32GB of onboard storage with Google’s photo cloud storage as the backup.
Apparently, there is no microSD card storage here, so keep that in mind. An 8MP rear camera with LED flash lets you take decent photos on the go. No front selfie camera is mentioned in the official press release.
The Nokia 3.1 C, intended for Cricket Wireless (“C” is for “Cricket,” presumably), features the same size display as the Nokia 3.1 A, same rear camera, onboard storage, and all. The screen size and aspect ratio for the Nokia 3.1 A and Nokia 3.1 C matches that of the Nokia 1 Plus HMD unveiled at Barcelona, Spain back in February of this year.
Both the Nokia 3.1 A and Nokia 3.1 C feature polycarbonate shells. Since these phones are coming to prepaid programs under the AT&T umbrella (Cricket is an AT&T mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO), keep in mind that these will be ultra-affordable (hence the use of polycarbonate plastic shells).
Both the Nokia 3.1 A and Nokia 3.1 C feature Google’s Android 9.0 Pie right out of the box (no HMD “skin” atop of it, as you get with other Android OEMs), so you can expect Adaptive Brightness and Adaptive Battery to merely sip your phone’s battery life. Though there’s no specific battery size mentioned for either phone, HMD says that two-day battery life is possible out of both handsets.
The Nokia 3.1 A comes in Black (only) and will arrive at select Walmart stores on June 10, 2019. The Nokia 3.1 C will be available in White (only) and will arrive at Cricket Wireless stores on June 14, 2019. There is no word on pricing yet for either handset, though HMD says interested buyers can expect a price reveal on launch day.
In addition to the Nokia 3.1 A and Nokia 3.1 C, HMD Global already announced two new smartphones back in January of this year for the US, the Nokia 2V for Verizon Wireless and the Nokia 3.1 Plus for Cricket Wireless.
The Nokia 2V for Verizon features a 5.5-inch display with an HD (1280 x 720p) screen resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 425 SoC, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage with a 128GB-capable microSD card slot for expandable storage, 5MP front camera, 8MP rear camera, Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition), and a 4,000mAh battery.
The Nokia 3.1 Plus for Cricket Wireless features a 6-inch display with HD+ resolution, an octa-core processor (unnamed), with 32GB of internal storage plus a 400GB-capable microSD card slot for expandable storage, 8MP front camera, a dual rear camera 13MP+5MP combo with LED flash, and a 3,500mAh battery with Android 9.0 Pie.
HMD Global just turned two years old back in December 2018, two full years since it acquired the Nokia brand globally. The company has sold 70 million smartphones under the Nokia brand in that time.
