Verizon announced today that the LG V50 ThinQ 5G will be making its way to its network starting this Thursday, June 20.
This is LG’s first 5G smartphone and the fourth 5G smartphone available on Verizon – if you count the two “5G upgradable” Motorola smartphones”.
The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is going to cost $999, making it cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, which is priced closer to $1300.
Currently, Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network is available in two cities: Chicago and Minneapolis. But by the end of 2019, it will be available in 30 cities, which include Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Des Moines, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Little Rock, Memphis, Phoenix, Providence, San Diego, Salt Lake City, and Washington, DC.
Verizon is also planning to announce additional cities by the end of the year.
LG’s V50 ThinQ 5G is essentially a V40 ThinQ that was released last year, but it has an upgraded processor, larger battery and the new 5G modem from Qualcomm.
The spec sheet includes a 6.4-inch Quad HD+ OLED display, powered by the Snapdragon 855 chipset, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There is also a micro SD card slot available for expanding the storage on the V50 ThinQ 5G. There is also a 4000mAh capacity battery, which should get you through the day, even when connected to 5G.
LG’s popular triple-camera setup is also still available on the V50 ThinQ 5G. So on the backside, there’s a 12-megapixel standard lens with a f/1.5 aperture, a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor with a f/2.4 aperture and then a 16-megapixel wide-angle lens with a f/1.9 aperture. That’s going to allow you to take any shot you want, no matter how close or far away you are.
This is the fourth smartphone in Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband compatible lineup. It slots in between the Motorola Moto Z4 and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. At $999, it’s actually somewhat affordable. Seeing as this is a high-end smartphone from LG, but it’s about the same price as most other 4G LTE smartphones.
It’ll cost you $999, but Verizon is offering up to $650 off for those that switch. That’s a $200 credit for switching and then up to $450 for trading in your smartphone. That brings down the cost pretty dramatically. It is also waving the 5G monthly access fee for those that purchase the V50 ThinQ 5G now. That will be a $10/month credit that you’ll see on your bill.
5G Ultra Wideband is not available everywhere just yet, in fact it’s barely available right now. But the good thing is that, the LG V50 ThinQ 5G will still work on the 4G LTE network. So if you do live in Chicago, and venture out into the suburbs, your V50 ThinQ 5G will still work, it might be a bit slower, but you do still have Verizon’s reliable 4G LTE network on your smartphone.
