Samsung’s Galaxy Fold successor is rumored to be a smaller foldable smartphone, with a 6.7-inch main display. This information comes from South Korea today, before Samsung has even officially launched the original Galaxy Fold smartphone.
As mentioned, it will have a 6.7-inch AMOLED main display that is going to fold vertically, like the original Galaxy Fold. There is also a very, very small 1-inch display on the front of the phone. According to the report out of South Korea, this display is going to be used to show “simple information” only. Think of notifications and the time.
With this smaller display, the new Galaxy Fold should be about the size of the Galaxy S10 5G, when it is unfolded. But when it’s folded, it should be a lot more compact, which is what a lot of users were asking for, after seeing the Galaxy Fold. This phone is supposed to enter mass production in November, with the phone itself being available in the first half of 2020.
One important thing to note here, is that with Samsung going with a smaller version of the Galaxy Fold, it could make it more affordable. The Galaxy Fold is currently priced at $1980, which is a pretty insane price. Of course, this price is due to the fact that Samsung is using a number of new components that aren’t as cheap as what they’d be using in something like the Galaxy S10. So the price did make sense, but it also meant that very little consumers would be buying it.
The Galaxy Fold was announced in February at Samsung’s Unpacked event in San Francisco. It was announced alongside the Galaxy S10 lineup, however the Galaxy Fold still has not launched, officially. It was due to launch in April, but after many reviewers who got the device early, started experiencing a ton of different issues, Samsung nixed the launch and has been working to fix the issues on the Galaxy Fold. It still has not launched, but recent rumors point to a July launch for the Galaxy Fold. Though, it’s unclear whether that will actually happen or not.
A smaller Galaxy Fold is going to be a great idea for a lot of people. Some people just want a larger display, in a smaller form factor. Instead of a smartphone that can unfold into a tablet. Not to mention it should also be cheaper, since it’s smaller and will use less components. But we have to hope that Samsung has fixed the issues with the original Galaxy Fold, before this second generation model launches next year.
If this new smaller Galaxy Fold is indeed coming next year, it’s possible that we could see it launched at CES, if not it’ll likely head to MWC and be announced alongside the Galaxy S11. It likely won’t be under $1,000 but it should be closer to the sub-$1,500 price tag. Which might not seem like a lot, but in reality, it actually is. Of course, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the Galaxy Fold this year.
