Samsung seems to be preparing to launch a new rugged phone, and based on its name, this could be a considerable step up from the Galaxy Xcover 4s. Samsung has trademarked the “XCover FieldPro” name at EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office).
Samsung had introduced a number of rugged smartphones as part of its “Xcover” series, the latest one being the Galaxy Xcover 4s, which arrived earlier this month. The device is not yet available for purchase, it will be starting next month, and it seems like Samsung is already preparing to bring us something new to the table as far as rugged hardware is concerned.
The Galaxy Xcover 4s is a mid-range smartphone, it is fueled by the Exynos 7885 64-bit octa-core processor, and it comes with 3GB of RAM. The device also comes with a fairly small display for today’s standard, as it sports a 5-inch HD panel.
Needless to say, if you prefer more powerful rugged smartphones, and at the same time you like Samsung’s products, you don’t really have an option to buy at the moment. Well, the Xcover FieldPro will change that, if that is what we think it is.
This trademark has been filed by Fieldfisher LLP from the UK, a company which often files trademarks in Samsung’s name. In fact, that very same company filed the Galaxy Tab Active Pro trademark earlier this month.
So, why do we think this is a considerable improvement over the Galaxy Xcover 4s? Well, its sheer name, the “FieldPro” part suggests a “Pro” variant of the device, which screams high-end, at least to us.
We do not really know anything about this device just yet, but let’s just assume that it is based around the Snapdragon 855 SoC. Such a phone, with the right design, could attract people who are looking for a more powerful rugged smartphone, and there is definitely a market out there for such devices.
Not many smartphone manufacturers actually create such phones, rugged phones are often either low-end or mid-range devices, so this would definitely be an improvement. It wouldn’t be the first time Samsung does something this either, as the company already released several flagship-grade rugged phones in the past, as part of its “Active” series.
Those devices were a part of the Galaxy S series, though, with the addition of the “Active” name, but this upcoming phone probably will not be, at least not based on the trademark that Samsung filed. That also leads us to believe that the device will look considerably different than the Galaxy S series.
It is still unclear when will this phone arrive, as this is just a trademark filing, it may not even launch at all, but it hopefully will. Chances are Samsung will include a larger display in this phone, larger than a 5-inch panel included in the Galaxy Xcover 4s, at least. We’ll let you know if any new info becomes available, but for the time being, this trademark, and our assumptions, are all that we have.
