We published our top picks for Google’s dark theme applications yesterday, and it’s now time to do the same for non-Google Android applications (you will not find a single Google-made app on this list). Do note that there are tons of apps in the Play Store which support a dark mode, a ton of great apps, in fact. In the list down below, you will only see our 10 favorite apps with a dark theme.
We actually did our best to keep this list as diverse as possible, so you won’t see two apps that have the same purpose, even though we could have, considering how many such applications are available.
Apps that we’ve listed down below are not sorted in any specific way, just because one application is mentioned before the other doesn’t really mean anything, so keep that in mind when you start scrolling.
Joey for Reddit
Joey for Reddit is one of the best third-party applications for Twitter. If you’re anything like me, you don’t really like using the official Reddit app, even though it did become a lot better lately. Joey for Reddit comes with a great dark theme, you can set that theme to be truly dark for OLED panels, or play around with it until you find what suits you, as there are tons of options available in this app. That goes for a lot of other aspects of the app, in fact, not just theming, as this app is packed with features that can boost your Reddit experience.
Pi Music Player
Pi Music Player became quite popular a while back, and for a good reason. This music player application is great, it comes with a bunch of features, and it features a proper dark theme, which plays nice with OLED displays. The app’s design is really simple, and yet extremely functional, while the app recently got an update that allows you to play YouTube videos in a small window (Picture-in-Picture mode).
Pocket has been around for ages, and a while back the company decided to redesign this app. As part of that redesign, Pocket actually received a proper dark mode option, though you can opt for a lighter variant if you want. The company actually did a great job with implementing dark mode here, as reading text while in dark mode is extremely simple with Pocket, and that’s extremely important when it comes to read-it-later apps.
Inoreader
If you’re on the lookout for a great RSS reader, Inoreader definitely belongs in that category. This is not the most popular RSS reader out there, but it is one of the best. Inoreader comes with a proper OLED dark mode, and a recent redesign that took place improved the app quite a bit, as it’s modernized now, and a true joy to use. If you don’t like regular news apps, and would like to tweak your news sources to the max, try out Inoreader.
Pocket Casts
If you enjoy listening to podcasts, then you should definitely try out Pocket Casts. This is one of the most popular applications for podcasts in the Play Store, and it comes with a great dark mode. The company even redesigned the app a while back, and even though the new design wasn’t accepted well at first, the company did its best to fix some issues that users requested, and it’s once again a great option.
TV Time
Are you watching a lot of TV shows? Is it getting hard keeping track of everything? Well, TV Tim comes in handy if that is the case. You can add all of your TV shows in this application, and it will keep track of what episodes you watched, you simply need to mark the ones that you’ve watched, and that’s it. The design of the app is great, and TV Time will also help you discover new shows to watch, based on what your favorites are. This app also comes with a great dark mode, even though it’s not pitch black.
Twitter’s official application is actually really, really good, and many people use it. There are some great third-party alternatives out there, but if you prefer the company’s official app, you’re getting a dark mode option along with it. Twitter has announced that a pitch black dark theme will become available soon as well, but for the time being, you’re getting a dark gray option only, which looks great.
Zedge
Zedge is an app that has been around for ages, and it’s one of the best options if you’re looking for wallpapers or ringtones. This app has a huge base of both of that, and a dark mode has been a part of this app for quite some time now. Zedge’s dark mode is not pitch black, but it’s quite dark and a joy to use, it fits well with the rest of the app’s design, so the company did a really good job when it comes to its implementation.
Solid Explorer
Solid Explorer is one of the most popular third-party file manager applications in the Play Store, and for a good reason. This application is extremely versatile, and packed with features, it contains everything you need when it comes to a file manager. Just like every other app on this list, Solid Explorer does come with a dark mode as well, and that feature has been a part of the experience for a while now, while it works really well.
Viber Messenger
Viber Messenger is our messaging app of choice when it comes to a dark mode, even though this app doesn’t deliver a pitch black dark theme option. The dark gray theme is included, however, and it actually fits great with purple accents that Viber is well-known for. It is not yet known whether Viber will get an OLED-friendly dark mode at some point, like Facebook Messenger, but if it doesn’t, the one it currently has will do the trick, as it looks great in combination with the rest of the app’s design.
