Stockholm-based company Truecaller, known for its anti-spam software that screens calls and its call-blocking, has now added voice calling to its list of superpowers.
The company confirmed the new addition earlier today, stating that it has also started rolling out the new free voice calling to Android users. The new voice calling feature only supports two people engaged in conversation at a time. In other words, there’s no free voice calling for group chats. The new functionality was tested with alpha and beta testers just four weeks ago, with the feature being considered for Truecaller customers a few months ago.
There is good news on the horizon for those who want group voice calling, however. A representative noted that Truecaller intends to roll out group voice calling support soon, though no specific date was stated.
Truecaller’s new free voice calling feature brings the company up to speed with the likes of Facebook and WhatsApp, though its lack of group voice calling leaves something to be desired. Truecaller has made a huge impact in countries like India, where calls were often expensive until Indian carrier Reliance Jio started offering free calls for its customers.
The new voice calling feature is rolling out to iOS in a matter of weeks.
Since 2016, Truecaller has added a number of excellent features to its calling app to make the experience better for customers. Truecaller added Smart Call History in March 2016 so that users can completely replace their phone dialer if they so choose. The “Smart Call History” lets you see the names and numbers of those who are calling, even those who don’t want their identity revealed.
Whether or not the contact name or number is saved in your contacts list is irrelevant because Truecaller’s Smart Call History will find them. Additionally, Smart Call History shows you the availability of your friends and family (whether they’re free or busy at the moment) and lets you replace your native phone dialer with and make calls with Truecaller.
At the end of 2016, Truecaller introduced a “Call Me Back” option in Android to allow callers to send push notifications to contacts’ phones so as to remind them to call the caller back. At the end of 2016, Truecaller pushed out an update that added flash messaging, mobile payments, and
In 2017, Truecaller rolled out Google Duo integration to its phone app, allowing Truecaller customers to make Google Duo video calls without leaving the Truecaller app. Just a few months earlier, Truecaller added integration for WhatsApp, Skype, Facebook Messenger, and Viber as well.
That same year, the company brought its app to iOS 10 for iPhone customers. Truecaller Priority rolled out, letting users know when a legitimate company called them as opposed to a spammer. To pull this off, Truecaller teamed up with Flipkart’s e-commerce partner, EKART, to scan for calls made by Flipkart, Myntra, Jabong, Yepme, PayTM, Voonik, Hopscotch, and Healthkart, among others.
In version 7.71, Truecaller added a contacts shortcut for Android so its customers won’t have to look all over for their contacts when making phone calls.
Truecaller is based in Stockholm, Sweden. Founded in 2009 by then-students Nami Zarringhalam and Alan Mamedi, the app is designed to help identify unknown and unwanted calls when they’re made. Truecaller has grown from a simple desire of two students to now boast of 130 million daily active users and 300 million app installs. Truecaller to date has identified and blocked 10 billion spam calls.
