Xumo has now confirmed the launch of a new Android TV app.
The company announced the new app earlier today and the app has already shown up on the Google Play Store. By the looks of it, the app actually became available a few days ago so some users may have already seen and downloaded it.
For those now thinking of giving this service a try, unlike some companies who simply open up their existing app to new devices, Xumo has launched a different and dedicated Android TV app. Therefore, users will need to make sure they are attempting to download the right app for the right device otherwise the app will show as incompatible with any Android TV device.
Speaking of compatibility, it should be pointed out that although this is an Android TV app, it does not seem to support the platform in its entirely. As a result, users may find their particular Android TV device is still not compatible when attempting to download the correct app from Google Play Store.
Officially, Xumo has confirmed support for the NVIDIA SHIELD, Sony TVs powered by Android TV, and the Nexus Player. The Google Play Store listing seems to confirm as much with devices such as LeEco TVs powered by Android TV and the Xiaomi Mi Box currently listed as incompatible – the newest Mi Box shows as incompatible while the previous generation is supported.
Xumo is part of the new wave of services that looks to provide completely free access to live TV. These services are built around the ad-supported model so although you won’t need to subscribe to make use of the service, you won’t have the option to remove the ads.
In addition, compared to more prominent paid-for live TV streaming services, these free live TV solutions usually come with far fewer channels available. At least, when it comes to the most well-known and sought-after channels.
In saying that, Xumo claims to offer access to more than 160 channels through its service, so this is one worth checking out to see if it is right for you.
What’s more, the service is not simply limited to what’s on now as there is an on-demand element which provides access to a wide enough selection of TV shows and even movies. Granted, they are not necessarily the newest or best movies, but they are still free for those who are happy enough to contend with the ads.
As this is a free service there’s very little to do beyond downloading the app. Xumo obviously does not require any payment details and does not even ask for the user to sign up. Instead, the service will immediately launch with the user able to check out what’s on or available and start watching.
After a brief test the app seems to work fairly well and seems to be largely bug-free. The guide provides detailed information for what’s on now and next and the interface as a whole is fairly simple to navigate.
