Setting up your brand new device can be a real pain. Google can help you with a portion of the setup process, by restoring your previously used applications and included data, but there’s much more to the story.
That being said, OnePlus had introduced a rather nifty little app last year, which got much improved since launch. We’re talking about OnePlus Switch, an app that can help you quite a bit when it comes to migrating to a new handset.
This application had been launched by OnePlus, but it is not limited to OnePlus smartphones, you can use it with basically any Android phone out there, as long as that phone is running Android 7.0 Nougat or a newer version of Google’s operating system. Do note that the app may encounter issues on some phones, OnePlus cannot guarantee it will work on simply everything.
In this article, we will explain to you the process of migrating to a new device using this application, but before we start, do note that you will need to install the app on both devices, which is to be expected.
Install the app on your new phone
Once you get a new phone and get through the initial setup process, connect to the Internet, and open up the Play Store. Needless to say, you will need to be logged into your Google account at this point.
Once you’re there, type in “OnePlus Switch” in the search bar, and install OnePlus Switch. This application is completely free, and you will not be bothered by ads or anything of the sort along the way.
Set up OnePlus Switch on your new device
Once the app is installed, open it. Do not be threatened by the number of permissions this app requires, that is perfectly normal considering it needs to access various parts of your device in order to transfer data.
Once you open it and allow it to access various parts of your device, you will be able to access the main page. There, you will be asked to select whether this is your new phone or your old phone, select the “I’m new phone” option.
On the next screen, the app will ask you if your previous phone is a OnePlus device, or some other Android phone. Once you make that selection, you will be asked to install OnePlus Switch on your old device.
Install OnePlus Switch on your old phone
As far as installation goes, simply repeat the process mentioned earlier. Locate the app on the Play Store, and install it. You’ll need to allow the app to access various parts of your old phone as well, and when you reach the main page, select “I’m old phone” option.
Once you do that, a barcode scanner will pop up on your old smartphone, and you will need to scan the barcode provided on the display of your new handset. In order for the barcode to appear on your new phone, simply hit “Continue” in the OnePlus Switch app. Once you scan the barcode, the two phones will sync up.
Choose what data you want to migrate to a new device
Once the two phones sync up, you will be asked to select what data you want to migrate to your new smartphone. You can migrate your contacts, call logs, messages, notes, pictures, calendar, videos, audio, wallpapers, applications (without data), and more. The data backup option can actually back up your data, so that you can restore it at any point, so that portion of the transfer is also covered.
Once you choose what data you’d like to migrate to your new phone, simply hit the “Begin Migration” button in the bottom-right corner of the app’s UI. The data migration process will commence, and all you have to do is wait for it to finish. Once it’s done, you’ll have all that data on your new smartphone, and won’t have to transfer any of that manually.
