Huawei's Hongmeng OS Being Tested On The Mate 30: Report

According to a new report, Huawei is currently testing its brand new operating system on the upcoming Mate 30 flagship. As most of you know, Huawei is developing its own OS called “Hongmeng OS”, and that operating system has been in development for a while now, even before the US issued a trading ban for China.

Speaking of which, President Trump did allow US companies to do business with Huawei once again, not long ago, after he talked to the Chinese President. Despite that, though, the Commerce Department has been instructed to treat Huawei as blacklisted still, so the whole situation is quite confusing.

That is why Huawei’s Hongmeng OS may still come in handy for the company, and why the company may still include it on its upcoming smartphones, including the upcoming Mate 30 flagship series. We’ll see what will happen, but there’s a good chance it will come pre-installed.

In any case, this information that Huawei is currently testing the OS on the Mate 30 comes from Huawei Central, and the source says that it received such info through an e-mail, from a “person related to the matter”. In that e-mail, the source was also notified that Hongmeng OS will release alongside the Huawei Mate 30, though it doesn’t really mention if it will come pre-installed or not.

It is also worth noting that in that e-mail, the exact name of the operating system was not mentioned, we mentioned the name “Hongmeng OS” as that is the rumored name for the operating system, and that is the name that Huawei Central used in its report. Huawei actually trademarked this name last month in a number of countries, so… that’s probably what it will be called.

Huawei’s CEO did note, back in March, that this OS was developed in case the US bans Huawei, like it did earlier, so the situation between the US and China will probably play a huge role in what OS comes pre-installed on the Huawei Mate 30 series. If everything ends up being solved by then, Huawei may opt to include EMUI on top of Android, instead of having Hongmeng pre-installed.

The Huawei Mate 20 series arrived back in October last year, and the Mate 30 series is expected to do the same in October this year, unless Huawei’s plans get messed up by the US-China relations at some point.

Huawei will introduce two smartphones as part of the Mate 30 flagship series, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, while a mid-range Mate 30 Lite may also become official at some point. Both the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will be made out of metal and glass, while Leica’s lenses will be included as well. Both devices will sport extremely thin bezels, and it remains to be seen if the company will include a display hole, notch, or find some other solution for the front-facing camera problem.

The two devices will be fueled by the upcoming Kirin 985 or 990 processor, while Android Q may come pre-installed on both phones, but we’ll see what will happen, as the situation with software is quite complicated for Huawei at the moment.
