Nokia may be ready to follow up its Nokia 9 PureView with a new flagship, dubbed the Nokia 9.1 PureView, as early as Q4 2019, according to unnamed sources close to the matter. The news comes following fixes to what the sources say are some of the issues with the purported device’s ‘unique selling points’ — most notably, problems that were initially present in the five cameras of its predecessor.
According to the sources, HMD Global is looking to use the handset to take a second stab at the camera-savvy side of the mobile market. Regarding improvements to the camera performance itself, the details are presently vague. A renewed focus will be placed on both video and photo performance, particularly in low-light circumstances, while the speed of the camera will be another area that the company hopes to push forward.
Algorithm and processor adjustments are indicated to be behind those enhancements with the same “Light” camera technology introduced with the original Nokia 9 PureView underpinning everything. Optimizations for the cameras are reportedly still underway but the improvements should be readily-noticeable if the rumors prove accurate.
Another camera alteration will also be present at the front of the device, with current speculation pointing toward the selfie snapper being placed underneath a Nokia X71-style punch-hole display.
What else will be new?
The use of an in-display camera should help Nokia to dramatically cut back on the size of the bezels used around the Nokia 9.1 PureView’s display if the rumors are accurate but won’t be the only upgrade.
It isn’t immediately clear whether the sensors used at the rear of the device will be incremented to new hardware. There’s no information presently available with regard to whether or not the 4,000mAh battery found inside the current Nokia 9 PureView will be updated either, let alone the 6GB of RAM or 128GB of storage.
There will be an entirely new version of Android under the hood, however. Namely, that’s going to be the still-in-development Android Q and it’s going to be powered by a Snapdragon 855 SoC this time around too — instead of the much older Snapdragon 845 found in the Nokia 9 PureView.
The chipset makes sense since this is a flagship device and would bolster performance significantly. Qualcomm has claimed approximately 45-percent better performance over the Snapdragon 845 with the Snapdragon 855, which should help support the improvements to the cameras.
Last but not least, that new chipset will enable the handset to access next-generation 5G networking.
Q3 2019 has been speculated too but don’t count on it
Previous rumors associated with this device have reportedly claimed the Nokia 9.1 PureView could be launched as early as the third quarter instead of the newly suggested fourth quarter. That doesn’t seem likely at this point and even the fourth quarter might be a stretch since the company is still working out details surrounding the design of the handset.
While it wasn’t widely lauded, thanks mostly to problems with its first-generation camera technology, the Nokia 9 PureView was only just launched in February too. So it may be more reasonable to expect the Nokia 9.1 PureView to land in the first quarter of 2020 instead.
