Blast is giving gamers a path to more financial savings. The new app was created by the co-founder of the micro-savings app Acorns and offers multiple ways to save.
The idea behind Blast is to let gamers save money by doing something they already do. Play games.
If you’re a gamer, you know how important it can feel to play uninterrupted. Phone manufacturers know this too which is why devices now offer “Game Modes” that allow for interruption-free sessions.
This is also how Blast works, running in the background so you can game without it nagging you in any way.
With Blast There Are Two Ways To Save
Saving money isn’t always an easy thing for everyone, but Blast aims to make it easier. Initially there are two ways to expand financial savings with the app.
Both methods of course revolve entirely around gameplay.
Game-Based-Savings
The first, is simply by playing games that you have installed on your phone. Blast will run in the background and record the time spent playing. It then saves one cent for every minute you play.
The kicker here that users will want to be aware of is that this is tied to your bank account so it’s your own money. This is a financial savings app, after all. Think of it sort of like Digit, except in order to have the app save money from your own account, you need to play games.
If you’re worried about security, you can rest easy. Blast sets up the account link with a 256-bit encryption. Money transferred from your checking account is also kept in an FDIC ensured account with bank-level security. On top of all that, Blast Savings accounts have a 2-percent APY interest gain, so you’ll get a bit more then what you put in.
Playing To Earn
The secondary method for saving is based more on earning. To earn money, you play games and link them to the Blast app. There are a couple of caveats, though.
You have to complete specific tasks associated with those games and you have a specific amount of time to complete them in. Only certain games have tasks too, like Star Trek Fleet Command or Marvel Contest of Champions.
New games should be added to the platform on a regular basis though.
Bonus Earnings Opportunities Offer More Savings
In addition to the two main ways to set yourself up financially Blast also has weekly cash payouts.
To acquire these, you need to climb the leaderboard to the top. Just like with competitions, gaming is key here, and playing well in addition to completing missions faster than others affords you a better chance to win.
The Takeaway
Primarily, Blast is a financial savings app. It’s meant to help you stash a little bit of your own money away whenever you play games. As an added bonus, you can earn money from playing specific games and completing missions.
It’s worth keeping in mind that the biggest portion of consistent savings is going to come from you, the gamer.
What Blast is not, is an app to win a bunch of money fast by gaming. It’s designed to promote and foster a good savings habit, and reward you in the process.
Right now this is only available on Android devices, but there will be a PC version of Blast later this year alongside an iOS release.
