A good night’s rest is something that most people will be able to tell you is one of the most important things you can incorporate into your life if you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle. While exercise and eating better, healthier food are big factors for living healthier, proper sleep and rest are just as important as they set up your ability to perform optimally in your tasks and activities the following day.
Google Fit is now adding a couple of new features that are geared towards helping you become more well-rested so that you can attack the next day with plenty of energy. The two new features are a dark theme for the app, and the ability to track your sleep patterns so you can obtain a better picture of how good (or bad) your sleep was, then change things up accordingly to improve it as needed.
When it comes to the Dark Theme, Google Fit technically had this feature before today’s announcement about the rollout. Back on July 12 it was discovered that the current version of the app at that time was beginning to support a dark theme, but only if you had your system-wide theme set to dark.
With this latest update to Google Fit there will now be an option to toggle a dark theme on or off within the app itself. So if you have your system-wide theme set to light, you can still go into Google Fit and toggle it to dark separately just like you can with some of Google’s other apps.
Google says the dark theme as well as the sleep tracking features are rolling out to users over the next week, so it may not show up for you right away. Since you can turn on dark theme system-wide though, you can still have dark theme in Google Fit that way until the option arrives in the app proper over the next few days.
Once dark theme is available and if you toggle it on, it won’t just help you wind down when viewing the app at the end of the day, but it can also be less strain on the eyes and help save battery life, so there is certainly precedent for leaving it on all of the time and not just toggling it when the battery gets low or when it gets later in the evening.
In regards to the sleep tracking features, these aren’t entirely workable in Google Fit without some outside help, meaning you will need a third-party app that takes care of the sleep tracking features which you can connect to Google Fit so it can display the results.
Once you have that out of the way or if you’re already using such an app, connect it up to Google Fit and you’ll find various details about the different sleep elements like your sleep patterns in the form of easy to read charts, along with additional sleep insights in the Journal section of the app. If you don’t already have Google Fit installed, you can grab it from the Play Store.
