Google was instrumental in bringing Orcs Must Die 3 to fruition. This is according to the CEO of Robot Entertainment Patrick Hudson.
Following the game’s official unveiling during the second Stadia Connect livestream, Hudson took to Reddit to clarify things. In particular, the choice to make Orcs Must Die 3 a Stadia exclusive.
The main reason, is that the game would probably not exist without Google’s help. Hudson tells a brief story of downsizing and restructuring the company’s goals and future projects.
Those future projects are why Robot Entertainment eventually met with Google. It wanted to discuss the possibility of bringing some of them to the Stadia platform.
Google Are “Big Fans” Of The OMD Franchise
Turns out, people at Google, at least the ones Hudson and his team met with, are big fans of the OMD franchise. This led the two companies to talk about a potential OMD game on Stadia.
Ideas were shared, cultivated, and worked out, and Robot Entertainment decided to grab the opportunity to make this new game.
Hudson says Google is massively behind Orcs Must Die 3, noting that it wouldn’t be possible without Google’s support.
Because of Google’s backing they were able to hire more people to help make the OMD 3 a reality. Hudson doesn’t explicitly say why the company decided to make the game a Stadia exclusive. It’s possible that feelings of loyalty and admiration from the support to bring the game to life led to the decision.
What’s more likely is that as part of the partnership between Google and Robot Entertainment, Stadia would get the game. Google helped make Orcs Must Die 3 happen, so it was probably agreed upon to make the game an exclusive in return for the support.
OMD 3 Will Come To Other Platforms
Robot Entertainment is going to bring OMD 3 to other platforms, in due time. It is also an exclusive to Stadia, but a timed exclusive. Patrick Hudson states as much in his Reddit post.
The game will be released in the Spring of 2020 and it will be a timed exclusive on Stadia, which isn’t such a bad thing. This happens all the time with other platforms.
The good news for OMD fans who aren’t planning on buying into Stadia is that they will “eventually” be able to play it.
When exactly? Who knows. Timed exclusives can last for six months or even a year, but fans will know soon enough. Hudson mentions that more details on OMD 3 coming to other platforms will be shared at a later date.
