IMDb TV is now available through the IMDb Movies & TV Shows Android app.
IMDb TV is an ad-supported service that looks to offer access to movies and TV shows for free. In this sense it is similar to the services provided by The Roku Channel and Tubi.
IMDb TV first launched in January and during its initial stages was known as IMDb Freedive. However, Amazon and IMDb decided to rebrand the service as IMDb TV in June.
When Freedive/IMDb TV first launched it was only initially available on a small selection of devices. Primarily, users could only access the service either through the IMDb website or Amazon’s selection of Fire TV devices.
Since then, the device support has been slowly growing with today’s announcement confirming Android is now included in the fold.
Along with Android, IMDb TV is also now available through the iOS app.
No Android TV support
While this will be good news for Android users in general, it won’t be good news for all Android users. The IMDb Movies & TV Shows app is a free to download app although it still does not support Android TV devices. Due to this, Android TV users are not able to install the app on their device and use IMDb TV.
IMDb TV also does not currently support casting so users cannot cast content from the smartphone app to an Android TV device.
Users of an Android smartphone or tablet should have no issues downloading the app from the Google Play Store.
Getting started with IMDb TV
The Play Store listing does not currently advise that the new support is live. Likewise, the new feature is not clearly evident when the app is launched. However, the feature is working already. If a user searches for a title through the IMDb app interface, they will be able to start streaming the title on their device providing it is available for free through IMDb TV.
The only main requirement to using IMDb TV is that a user does need to have created an IMDb account. This is free to do and you will have to supply an email address if not using one of the auto sign-in account links. Signing up can be done via the IMDb TV website or within the Android app.
Once registered, users can add IMDb TV content to their watchlist via the website (or app) and then easily access and start streaming the content on their smartphone.
