Samsung’s next Galaxy rugged smartphone heading to AT&T now appears to be the Galaxy XCover FieldPro.
Android Headlines leaked an image of the next Galaxy rugged smartphone in July, while also confirming its destination was AT&T. Although at the time it was unclear what branding was going to be in use.
This week that question was answered by tipster, Evan Blass. Also known as @evleaks on Twitter, Blass released a new image that marries well with the previous one. In addition, Blass name-dropped the “Galaxy XCover FieldPro” moniker.
Not the fist XCover FieldPro mention
Although this is the first time we’re hearing this name linked with this phone, it is not the first time the name has come through. Samsung filed a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office back in June for “XCover FieldPro.”
Even more recently, a Bluetooth SIG listing was spotted for a phone going by the XCover FieldPro name.
Beneath the service still a mystery
In spite of images of the phone having surfaced and on the more than one occasion, as well as both Bluetooth SIG and trademark listings appearing online, there’s still no firm word on what this rugged phone will offer beneath the surface.
It was originally thought the XCover FieldPro was a repackaging of the long-rumored Samsung Galaxy S9 Active. However, due to the time that has passed since then, it could be the case the internals of the phone have changed to some degree.
If there’s no changes at all, then the XCover FieldPro will come with a 5.2-inch display along with a 2540 x 1440 resolution. In addition to an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, a 12.2-megapixel rear camera, and Android 8.1. Powering the XCover FieldPro will be an Exynos 9610 SoC and a 4,500 mAh capacity battery.
The Active is no more
Samsung appears to have now fully moved away from the Active branding. Previously, Samsung would release an Active version of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone – as was expected with the Galaxy S9 Active.
With this latest leak, it now seems clear what was originally branded as a rugged version of a flagship phone has moved over and joined the XCover family. Which is not that surprising considering the XCover line is a rugged smartphone series anyway.
It was originally thought the XCover FieldPro would launch in early August, but evidently that was not the case. At present, there’s no new information on when this phone will launch.
With the name now all but confirmed, however, it might not be too far away.
