Xiaomi has been at the very center of attention lately, as the company confirmed that a smartphone with a 64-megapixel camera is coming soon. That phone will be launched by Redmi, a company which separated from Xiaomi at the beginning of this year.
The device in question will arrive soon, it is expected to hit India in the fourth quarter of this year, and that is probably when Xiaomi will announce it for the Chinese market as well. The sensor in question comes from Samsung, it’s the company’s new ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor.
That’s not all, though, as Xiaomi has also confirmed that it will become the first company to launch a smartphone with a 108-megapixel sensor. That phone is said to use Samsung’s 108-megapixel ISOCELL sensor that will offer 12,032 x 9,024 images, at full resolution.
Some sources suggest that the first smartphone to include a 108-megapixel camera will be the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4, though take that info with a grain of salt. We really do not have any info regarding Samsung’s 108-megapixel camera, so we cannot know if the camera is aimed towards mid-range or high-end devices.
That 64-megapixel camera sensor may seem great, but that is a mid-range sensor, aimed at mid-range devices. The Redmi 8 is actually expected to ship with that camera sensor, not a flagship phone from Xiaomi or Redmi. The same could happen with the 108-megapixel sensor, as it could be just another mid-range sensor from Samsung, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Just a 64-megapixel ISOCELL sensor is aimed at mid-range smartphones, does not mean it’s bad, at all. In fact, we’re really looking forward to seeing what will this sensor be able to deliver when it gets built into a smartphone. The same can be said for that 108-megapixel camera that is expected to arrive.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 was announced back in October last year, and it became available for purchase in November. Something similar could happen with the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 this year, though the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G launch could mess up those plans. The Xiaomi Mi 9 5G is expected to arrive in the near future with the Snapdragon 855 Plus, QHD+ display, and 5G connectivity.
This is actually the reason why Xiaomi needs to pick the time for the Mi MIX 4 launch really carefully, otherwise it may end up competing against itself, even though the Mi MIX 4 will not support 5G… at least its initial model won’t.
The Xiaomi MI MIX 4 is actually expected to ship with that same Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC that will be included in the Xiaomi Mi 9 5G. That is Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, a new version of the Snapdragon 855.
In addition to that, the Mi MIX 4 will have extremely thin bezels, and will probably be made out of metal and glass. In addition to that, a metal + ceramic variant is also expected. The phone will pack in plenty of RAM on the inside, and a QHD+ display, most probably. An in-display fingerprint scanner is also expected, along with multiple rear cameras. Not much info leaked, so we’re mostly guessing here, but we’re expecting some leaks to start appearing soon.
