Lenovo made the first real competitor to Google’s Nest Hub
Lenovo was a launch partner for Google Assistant displays, about a year and a half ago, with the Smart Display 8 and 10. Now Lenovo’s back, with a slimmer and cheaper smart display that might be the best one yet.
It’s smaller, and that doesn’t always mean better, but when it comes to the Smart Display 7, it does.
Lenovo slimmed down the bezels and improved the speaker
The company listened to feedback from its customers, over the first two smart displays that it released. One of the big things that customers were complaining about was the speaker placement. Because it was on the left side of the display, it was not a stereo speaker, and depending on the angle that the Smart Display was at, the sound could be very hit or miss.
So Lenovo put the speaker on the bottom, and it improved the sound of the speaker. Giving it a more immersive sound. That also makes the Smart Display look smaller. Seeing as it is not as long as the 8-inch and 10-inch models.
Another thing that makes the Smart Display 7 look smaller, is the smaller bezels.
It’s 2019, and everything needs to have smaller bezels right? The Lenovo Smart Display 7 also gets smaller bezels, though they are still quite large.
These bezels are still going to be a bit larger, since there are some sensors built-in, like an RGB sensor and of course that camera for making video calls too.
Smart Display 7 has no problem standing out in the crowded Smart Display market
Since the first Smart Display by Lenovo was released in 2018, there has been a ton of competition coming out. From Google, LG, JBL, Amazon and others. But that competition isn’t a problem for the Smart Display 7.
The Lenovo Smart Display 7 is a smart display that can stand on its own. It does compete pretty heavily with Google’s Nest Hub (formerly the Google Home Hub), with the same price point and and same screen size. But what sets Lenovo’s apart is the better speaker, and better looks.
Lenovo opted for a fabric wrapped speaker, which makes the Smart Display 7 look pretty great. Especially in the gray fabric with white plastic making up the rest of the Smart Display 7.
As it stands right now, there is almost no reason to buy the Nest Hub over the Lenovo Smart Display 7. Which says a lot about Google and Lenovo.
Lenovo has just set the bar again, for smart displays, which makes things clear as to why it has earned Best Of IFA 2019.
