Hands-On With ROCKMAN X DiVE – Classic Gameplay Built For Mobile

ROCKMAN X DiVE (the upcoming Mega Man X mobile game) has officially entered the closed beta following Capcom’s announcement about it.

Though owners of ASUS’ ROG II gaming phones were granted access early as part of a deal between the two companies.

ROCKMAN X DiVE doesn’t have a scheduled release yet, so there’s a chance that it may launch this year and it may not. That said, if you’re curious to now more about the game this quick rundown should provide some more details.

ROCKMAN X DiVE will likely be a free game

There’s been no confirmation so far about whether Capcom will charge for this game or not. Based on the game play and some of the mechanics though it appears that it will be a free title.

The game features things like daily login rewards and the ability to buy more in-game currency (Zeny). Transactions aren’t available in the beta, which means it will probably go live once the game launches.

Controls take a little getting used to

The controls take a little getting used to. This isn’t uncommon for a mobile game and it may be easier for users with bigger screens. But, players with smaller screens on their display may find the controls to be a challenge at first.

The good news is that Capcom has baked in the ability to customize where the controls are. You can freely access these controls too, from both the home screen where the settings button is or even during a stage by pressing the pause button up in the top left corner.

Though you won’t have all of the controls unlocked at the start of the game, they will pop up in the control management screen.

You can change things like the size of the buttons as well as drag each one around to your desired location. If you end up not liking the setup, you can always go back to the default with a tap.

Stages in ROCKMAN X DiVE are bite-sized

Stages in the game aren’t long. At most they will take you a few minutes each to complete. This makes the game very accessible even if yo don’t have a lot of time to play.

The short stages might be a bit of a turnoff for longtime Mega Man fans as the stages were noticeably longer in console titles. If that doesn’t bother you than you should get a long just fine with what’s on offer.

Each stage also offers some replay value, as you have the ability to complete a stage with one, two, or three stars, and getting as many stars as possible helps for unlocking even more rewards. In addition, stages have special collectibles for you to acquire.

Gacha mechanics for materials, items, and characters plus daily login rewards

As with many mobile games especially coming from Asian countries, there are gacha mechanics included here. These will be for anything from items to characters.

While you will normally have to spend in-game currency to try your hand at acquiring something useful, you will get one attempt for free each day. Plus, there are daily login rewards as well, so there will be multiple ways to acquire stuff.

You can even get useful items from completing story stages, or opening capsules.

Characters and customization

All together there are eight playable characters in the game. Naturally you start off with X, but you can also play as Zero, Axl, Alia, Ultimate Armor X, Vile, Marino, and Pallette.

To play as these characters however you have to unlock them, which requires collecting data fragments for that specific character. You can acquire these either from stage completion or from opening up capsules, the game’s gacha mechanic.

As for customization, you can equip your character of choice with various weapons like X’s iconic buster and even Zero’s saber. You can equip gear to your characters too, and all of this can be upgraded to make it stronger.

It has plenty of potential

Without sugar coating things, the game has plenty of potential, but it’s likely to be the most popular with fans of the Mega Man franchise.

It has everything that some people despise about mobile games. That’s not necessarily a bad thing in this case, as energy timers and other elements don’t seem to be aggressive. Basically it doesn’t feel like you’ll hit a wall with game becoming pay to win.

It is still a mobile game, and one that will probably be free. So, at some point it may get a little bit grindy. If you love Mega Man though, ROCKMAN X DiVE is shaping up to be pretty decent.
