Huawei is allegedly working on a new processor, the Kirin 1000. That is a 5nm chip, if the source is to be believed, and it will ship with the Huawei Mate 40.
In fact, the source mentions that the Kirin 1000 will debut with the Mate 40 flagship next year. The Mate 40 is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2020. The Mate 30 landed in September this year, so the Mate 40 may follow in September 2020.
The Kirin 1000 is expected to succeed the Kirin 990
The Kirin 1000 is expected to succeed the Kirin 990 that was announced last month. Huawei’s Kirin 990 SoC is made using a 7nm FinFET Plus EUV technology, and comes with an integrated modem. On top of that, the Da Vinci Neural Processing Unit (NPU) is also included.
All in all, the Kirin 990 is a beastly processor, and stands side-by-side to other top offerings in the market. The Kirin 1000 will be a notable improvement, though, it seems.
If industry sources are to be believed, which are quoted by Huawei Central, the Kirin 1000 will be a 5nm chip. The source also mentions that it will be commercially launched in the second half of 2020, as expected.
The Kirin 1000 is expected to use the A77 architecture, but that’s all the info we have as far as that is concerned. For comparison’s sake, the Kirin 990 uses the A76 CPU architecture.
This is the first time we’re hearing about the Kirin 1000. Truth be said, its launch is still far away, so take the provided info with a grain of salt.
The Kirin 990 will fuel quite a few Huawei & HONOR flagships in the next year or so
The Kirin 990 is used by the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, and Mate 30 RS Porsche Design handsets. That chip will also fuel the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro when they arrive next year.
That’s not all, though. HONOR’s smartphones are also fueled by Huawei’s processors. The Kirin 990 will also be included in the upcoming HONOR Vera series of smartphones, and the HONOR 30 that is expected to arrive next year.
The Kirin 990 does come with 5G out of the box, but that functionality does not have to be enabled by default.
This is actually Huawei’s very first processor to come with an integrated 5G modem. With the Kirin 980, Huawei used the Balong 5000 modem, which is a separate unit.
The Kirin 990 actually supports UFS 3.0 storage, and is an improvement over the Kirin 980 across the board. The chip takes less space than its predecessor, while it also offers performance and battery-saving boosts. It remains to be seen what will the Kirin 1000 bring to the table.
