Facebook has been working on a dark mode for Instagram for a while now, it seems. Last month, it was discovered that a dark mode for Instagram is in beta testing.
To be clear, the dark mode has been available for Instagram Alpha app users. Some beta had received the feature back then, but only a handful of them.
Instagram’s dark mode now available to all beta users
That being said, dark mode is now available to all Instagram Beta users. As you can see in the provided images, Instagram adopted a dark mode with a pure black background. If you have a dark mode enabled on a system level, Instagram Beta will automatically adopt it. There doesn’t seem to be a manual switch, though.
This dark mode should be able to save you some battery on devices with OLED displays. Some parts of the UI adopt a dark gray color scheme, but for the most part, it’s black. White and dark gray text is also thrown into the combination.
The dark theme should be making its way to the stable channel in the near future. We’ve installed Instagram Beta in order to try out the dark mode, and it seems to be quite stable. At least at first.
That is always a good sign, as that means that a stable release is close by. We’re expecting this feature to hit Instagram’s main, stable application in a matter of weeks.
If you’d like to install Instagram Beta, and try out the dark mode, well, you can. There are two ways you can do this, in fact.

One way is to go to the Google Play Store, and open the Instagram app listing. There, you will see an option to join the beta channel. Once you agree to that, you’ll need to wait a bit until the process is complete. After that, the Google Play Store will proceed to install Instagram Beta on your phone.
If you’d like to do it manually, that is possible as well, though there’s no real reason you should do it. You can proceed to APK Mirror and download the latest Instagram Beta APK, to install it manually.
As already mentioned, going to the Play Store and enrolling in the beta program is a much simpler solution. Once Instagram stable gets dark theme, you can simply leave the beta channel, and the Play Store will install the stable app on your phone.
Do note that Instagram Beta is not exactly a separate app, at least it’s not portrayed that was on your phone. Instagram Beta will replace your current Instagram application, the one that you have installed.
