Samsung Galaxy S9 Gets The January 2020 Security Patch Before Pixel

Samsung is rolling out the latest beta update of One UI 2.0 and Android 10 to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, and you might be surprised to learn that it comes with the January 2020 security patch.

Now that security patch is really only a couple of weeks early, but it is well before the Pixel is due to get it, after January 6. It’s also worth noting that a lot of  Pixel 4 owners haven’t even gotten the December 2019 patch yet.

This is a problem that many have been complaining about on Twitter in recent weeks. As one of the main features or selling points of the Pixel, is timely updates. And they haven’t been timely, or even available.

This should be the last Beta One UI 2.0 update for Galaxy S9

We’re expecting the stable version of One UI 2.0 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ to start rolling out in January. So it makes sense for Samsung to incorporate the January update into this beta. That way there shouldn’t be many changes needed to be made between this beta and the stable update next month.

The update comes in at about 364MB in size, so there’s plenty of changes made to the software with this update. There is a changelog, though it’s not very detailed. It does mention a few bugs that were fixed, as well as Samsung apps being updated.

The list of bug fixes is pretty short, so it’s likely that there won’t be another beta update.

If you have the second beta on your Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ already, you should be able to download this update. Just head into Settings, About Phone, System Update and pull the update down for your device.

Galaxy S9 could be the first 2018 smartphone to get Android 10

Samsung has gotten really good at pushing out updates to its phones in a timely manner over the past couple of years. Mainly due to the launch of its beta program for new versions of Android.

And if Samsung is able to push out Android 10 and One UI 2.0 to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in January 2020, this would be the first 2018 smartphone to get Android 10.

It might even be a record. Seeing as older smartphones generally take much longer to get updates. Generally because smartphone makers are more focused on their latest smartphones and not one from a year ago.

The good news for Galaxy S9 users, is that the Android 10 update should be right around the corner.
