Back in November, MediaTek has announced its new flagship SoC, the Dimensity 1000. A month later, the MediaTek teased the arrival of the Dimensity 800, saying that it will be announced in early 2020.
Well, the Dimensity 800 is now here, as MediaTek announced it at CES 2020 in Las Vegas. The company claims that these chipsets are aimed at mid-range 5G smartphones. In other words, this will probably be one of those SoCs that will bring 5G to the masses.
The MediaTek Dimensity 800 comes with an integrated 5G modem
This processor comes with an integrated 5G modem, same as the Dimensity 1000. In case you’re wondering, this processor has been manufactured using a 7nm process. MediaTek expects to see first smartphones equipped with this processor in the first half of 2020.
This processor supports 5G with two carrier aggregation (2CC CA), for 30-percent wider high-speed layer coverage. The company also says that the chip will offer more seamless 5G handover and higher average throughput performance compared to solutions with single carrier (1CC, no CA).
The company designed this processor for both stand alone and non-standalone sub-6GHz networks. The Dimensity 800 includes multi-mode support for every connectivity generation, ranging from 2G to 5G.
This processor also comes with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) support. The Dimensity 800 includes support for Voice over New Radio (VoNR), while it delivers seamless connectivity across networks, and offers both data and voice on 5G.
MediaTek claims that the Dimensity 800’s 5G modem “delivers extreme energy efficiency”, and is more power efficient than other solutions in the market.
This chip combines four high-performing, and four power-efficient cores
The MediaTek Dimensity 800 combines four high-performance ARM Cortex-A76 cores operating at 2GHz, with four power-efficient ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz.
This processor actually comes with the same GPU as the Dimensity 1000, a four-core one. MediaTek’s APU 3.0 (AI Processing Unit) is also a part of the package.
As far as Dimensity 800’s ISP (Image Signal Processor) is concerned, well, MediaTek spared no expense. It supports up to four concurrent cameras. It supports up to 64-megapixel camera sensors, or large multi-camera options, such as 32+16-megapixel dual cameras.
MediaTek claims that it included flagship-class AI camera enhancements in this processor. The Dimensity 800 includes AI-autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, noise reduction, AI HDR, and dedicated facial detection hardware. On top of everything, this chip also offers the world’s first multi-frame 4K video HDR capability.
One more thing worth noting, is that this chip can support ultra-smooth fullHD+ displays of up to 90Hz. As already mentioned, first smartphones with this chip are expected to arrive in H1 2020.
