Galaxy Z Flip Is Official, It's Samsung's Second Foldable Smartphone

Samsung has just announced the Galaxy Z Flip, its second foldable smartphone. The Galaxy Z Flip is not a direct successor to the Galaxy Fold which arrived last year, but it is the second foldable smartphone the company announced thus far.

This handset has been made official during the company’s press conference in San Francisco. That press conference was mainly dedicated to the Galaxy S20, which we’ve already talked about.

The Galaxy Z Flip is the second foldable smartphone from Samsung

The Galaxy Z Flip is exactly what we thought it will be. The device leaked so many times in the last couple of weeks, that there was nothing left to hide, pretty much. Samsung even revealed its design during an Oscars ad quite recently.

The Galaxy Z Flip is a clamshell-style foldable smartphone. The device is made out of metal and glass, and it sports thinner bezels than the Galaxy Fold. It also replaces that unseemly display notch with a tiny display hole for the camera.

This handset folds right down the middle, and on top of its bezels, you’ll notice a layer of silicone. That has been placed there to protect the display.

The device includes two displays, 8GB of RAM & a side-facing fingerprint scanner

The Galaxy Z Flip is probably smaller than you think. The device is about the size of the Motorola Razr. In other words, this is a 6.7-inch smartphone that you can fold into a much smaller form factor.

The Z Flip includes a secondary display on the outside, the so-called ‘Focus Display’. That panel will show you who’s calling you, allow you to answer calls, see what time it is, and so on. It’s a really tiny display, though, so it’s not as useful as it could be.

The Galaxy Z Flip features a 6.7-inch fullHD+ Infinity Flex display (it’s made out of glass, not plastic), which folds, of course. Glass is far more resistant to scratches than plastic, so these are some great news for this handset. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 855+ SoC, which is Qualcomm’s flagship SoC for 2019.

The phone includes 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage. It is worth noting that you cannot expand this phone’s storage via a microSD card.

There are two cameras on the back of this phone, located next to the outer display. Samsung included two 12-megapixel cameras on the device, a regular, and ultrawide camera. We’ll talk more about them in a separate specs post.

A 10-megapixel camera is placed on the front side of the device, and the Z Flip does include stereo speakers. A side-facing fingerprint scanner is also included in the package, as is a 3,300mAh battery.

That battery is actually separated into two parts, and it supports fast charging (15W). The device also supports wireless charging, in case you were wondering, and also reverse wireless charging. The Galaxy Z Flip comes in Mirror Black, and Mirror Purple color variants, while it is priced at $1,380. Do note that some variants will get the Mirror Gold option as well. The phone will go on sale on February 14, at least in the US. It will be available in limited quantities, though.
